Squad Leader Archive
Thread: Noobie SL
I just made SL today, and after glorifying in it today I realized I was doing very little - but I did make decent xp. I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on what skill trees are more effective and why? Also - could you give me an idea about how to use /sysgroup? do i need to make a series of different messages for different situations, or is there an effective macro i can set up?
Thanks in Advance

Dahmon couldn't have said it better...if you want to waste your skill points, go for squad leader. The only difference between SL and Chef is that Chefs can make food.
The reason why I'm Squad leader (and going for master) is because I have hope that some day I'll be able to be useful and required in any group (not just terrain negotiation either lol)
Welcome to the unloved and bitter. As you can see there is alot of hate and discontent in this community BUT I applaud you for picking up the skill.
You must realize right now that the profession as far as actual skills and abilities is quite lacking. In fact I think there is a bug today that has broken everything. However, I have found great enjoyment and satisfaction by playing the role of Squad Leader for my group. Key in on thephrase "Playing the role" because I have found that it is where the fun is. You have to almost role-play the part. /sysgroup is the only really useful command right now. You can shorten it to /sys or make a new alias like: /alias ss /sys, which would make /ss for your /sys... As for macros I have made quite a number of them that I find invaluable when directing a battle. My favorite is: /alias tgt /sys \#ffff00\ YOUR TARGET IS %TT
What that does is when I type /tgt, a yellow message appears and in place of %TT is the name of whatever target I currently have selected.
My second most used command is: /alias ht /sys \#ffff00\ DOC, HELP %TT
When I see someone's HAM bar drop too low, I target that person and issue this command.
While using the /sys message is great fun and I get very involved in the management of my group, it does not allow the maximum amount of SL XP you could be getting. The current system for SL XP is based on how much damage you do times the number of group members. So if you sit back and manage the battle (watching your groups HAM bars, watching the radar and keeping an eye on targets), then you end up short chaning yourself since you aren't doing alot of damage yourself. While if you want to join the battle and get max XP, it does not leave you a great deal of time to do the "leading" that I find more fun.
As for what skill tree is best, to be honest they are all pretty broken right now. There is great hope that in the next couple of weeks we will see some "dev lovin" and the trees will completely be overhauled. Unless you play all day long, I imagine it will be some time before picking a tree is a necessary option for you. You need 175000 points to get the first level of anything.
This profession is what you make of it. There are plenty of people who will flame this post and others tell you how useless it is. Personally I find great satisfaction in the role. While I don't bring any definable bonuses or buffs to a group, my self imposed organization skills and creative uses of /sys during combat situations have really improved how my guilds hunts and combat operations have gone. It really comes down to your personality and if you actually have leadership skills in RL in order to then bring them to the game.
Hope this has helped a bit. If you have any other questions and want to avoid the inenvitable unhelpful flames in the forum, feel free to fire me an email or look me up ingame.
Enjoy

great reply. i had no idea there were problems with the profession. i just started working on sl and i don't mind waiting for it to be fixed if this is true. the first levels do require alot of xp, but i was able to get 4k in an hour or so with just 1 droid in my group. this game takes time anyway, so i like to just enjoy it and not be in too much of a rush to be the toughest guy on the block or whatever. too many people have already got me beat. just give this game a few more months and i predict things will change quite a bit as more players get tougher (not just the 24/7 people).i like the idea of organizing a larger military type group, and some of those ideas in the last post are very interesting. After exploring some other trees, i'm eager to get more xp in this profession, and hopefully serve a great purpose in future faction battles and missions. this role could be a deciding factor in battles if it works the way it's supposed to. Maybe that's why the xp requirements are so high. anyway, i'm drawn to theminority, andalways stoked to see variety and uniquenessin characters, not just a bunch of clones.
have fun
