Thread: On the whole faction pet control/player only debate

Personally I don't care which way this goes because I'm sure what I think doesn't matter in the long run. As I've said many times before, the devs have their agenda and sometimes our own matches up with theirs.

I AM going to put it to you in this sense: A squad Leader is a leader of a squad (boy i'm bright eh?). But considering the amount of skill points we use to achieve masterhood I can see why some people would want extra benefits. I personally would be more content if I saw ALOT more group benefits actually having a meaning when I fight, but that's another thread. Back to our spending the skill points etc. and benefits. Best I can do is be a master SL and Rifleman with some dabbling in a basic profession (like medic for example). But what happens when I first log on and say I was overt from the night before? I can't exactly rally a group up right there on the spot. That takes a few minutes. Meanwhile here comes "band of overts" charging at me. I spam some rifleskills but my SL bonuses are a bit useless at this point.

I'm NOT saying we should be able to solo anything, to be a soloist etc. etc. etc. We are a grouper unitI realize that. ButI think if a SL could feel more advantages for himself as a Leader then you wouldn't see so much debate on the whole issue of faction pet control. As it's been pointed at, Faction pets are a waste of time. They die in about 2 hits. The only reason ANYONE would want control of them is probably so they provide more targets when the SL is being attacked 1v1. I have to go along with some other posters on this case though. I think rank should determine fpet control rather than being a SL.

However, to improve SL on a personal level perhaps the SL should be given something unique and actually helpful to he/she only. I know mandalorian armor is coming out, but knowing the way things go most of us won't be able to wear it unless we're buffed thanks to encrumbrance. That won't help you much Maybe a weapon, maybe a defense mod, who knows. I'll let those brighter than myself start posting ideas on that.

But anyhoo, my credits have been tossed. Hopefully they won't come back void

i hear in the rumor mill there is an SL only weapon coming out... in fact, i think a mess of professions are getting a coupla new weapons... and i heard in the SL revamp, there's something really good for it

Even at least being able to have the "group" mods apply to yourself no matter if your in a group or not.

I don't know if I agree with a squad leader only weapon. I'd rather see specials that you can use with any ranged weapon, so that SL would complement any of the 3 main ranged weapons.

I agree, that wouldn't be a bad idea in and of itself. Question is would we get something like that. Doubtful. From experience it seems that it's "easier" to give a profession a new toy rather than mess with anything else.

In either case, I wholeheartedly hope the revamp does something to enhance the ability of the SL, both on a personal level AND group level.

I know I speak for alot of folk, but alot of us made SL characters with the idea to lead a squad of Reb Commandos or a squad of StormTroopers. Plenty of people have said have your squadies 'dress up' but we all know for the cost the armor sucks and thus don't use it, not to mention the impracticality.

The problem is this, the Imps have the AT-ST and there is no Reb counterpart. To an lesser extent there is no counterpart to the Dark Trooper either. The Devs will never allow multible AT-STs or even a single one with troops. This is because the Devs made the poor choice in relation to the cost, power, and PC command level of troops (rank). They need a total revamp of this system.

Now, the natural conclusion is that a SL character, even though he has no tie what-so-ever to this mess with the Faction troops, is made to lead an entire group of troops. I fully believe that NPC or PC troops should not matter in this reguard. Any sane person will prefer RL troops over NPC, but does it matter? It should not matter one bit. In fact I am willing to say that our skills should take that into reguard. Right now our abilities effect that NPC trooper without the need of wasting tree slots, so keep it that way. I played when you could have 3NPCs and it wasn't a problem then to control them, why is it a problem now? It shouldn't be, all most of us are asking is that a SL, as a leader character, have the option to lead more NPC troops than a Medic, a Marksman, a Scout, or any other profession.

Now people say that they do not want to see us become NPC handlers, but I covered that above. Others saythat they do not think we should be 'solo' characters. I say bull to that as well.We as a Profession have just as much of a right to solo as a Entertainer or Artisan, Commando or Bounty Hunter. We make due at the best of our abilities, and if those abilities should be leading a groupof NPCs, then so be it.

The reason I say we shouldn't necessarily solo was more along the lines of soloing heavy creatures (like the krayts etc. we've been hearing about). We SHOULD have equal footing when in a fight however. The one thing that is used is the fact that our profession DOES say we are more group orientated etc. with bonuses. Not so much for the individual.

What we want and what the devs want/intend may be two different things. Perhaps a compromise will be reached. Perhaps not. Only time will tell.
