I hear from many different profession based boards that their particular profession has flaws - more than others. I've not played SWG since March, but I'm starting to play it again now and I plan to play it for longer than before (bad illness prevented me). I've almost mastered Marksmen, Scout and Artisan and I would like to finish one of them so I can atleast say I became a 'MASTER' at something
After that I need to have my eyes set on something solid for the future.
Is it worth me becoming a Squad Leader?
From people who live and breathe it, what are the advantages and disadvantages?
If you had the choice again, would you choose it?
Do you feel, with your skills etc, you are equipt enough in PvE? or PvP?
Are any of you currently 'big players' in the galactic war?
Can you give me any hints, tips etc if I do choose this profession?
(please bare in mind when answering the above questions, you must be the Squad Leader profession - please note any extra professions if they have helped)
Thanks for your time.

For anyone who wants to become a Squad Leader they need to ask themselves some big questions.
1) Do like being part of a team, sacrficing your individual power, for that of a group?
2) Do you like helping others be better?
3) Do you mind not being on the front line instead spending half the time in combat watching your group instead of the target?
If the answer is yes, then SL might be for you.
The keys to SL are realizing that you are a support profession, you help others be better. At MSL you provide a +30 Melee/Ranged defense bonus to all players in your group. Also you have soem neat tricks like /formup which clears dizzy and stun from all group members, and /boostmorale which redistributes wounds among your group.
If you like soloing, or sologroups this isn't for you.
If you are interested in mastering SL I suggest going to Ft Tusken and just running a group there for several hours. You get mad SL/XP and if a trainer is ina player city nearby you could master in a matter of hours.

It's a matter of preference, I like being the glue that makes my group strong and telling them how to get the most out of the abilities I provide them.

For my groups the best advantages are the +30 to melee and ranged defenses (above cap), retreat, form up and rally. Disadvantages have been the HAM costs per ability and lack of left over skill points.

Definately.

PVP.. defense bonuses..retreat and and form up are invaluble.. PVE.. a small example: me 2 jedi a pikeman and a CM take on 4 ancient krayts in a row, form up kept anyone from being stunned/dizzy for any longer than 2 seconds. I also take groups up to the Corvette and have been hired for 250k to lead groups to DWB (Death Watch Bunker).

For the most part the GCW is still broke.. I am a guild leader of a rebel guild and I use SL abilities at every guild hunt. I have also been involved in taking down bases as well as defending bases, everyone involved appreciated my leadership.
Can you give me any hints, tips etc if I do choose this profession?
Practice your abilities so you know when's a good time to use each.. some abilities keep others from being able to trade, shuttle or rez, get feedback from your group after each battle to understand how each person was affected by your abilities.

I am Master Squad Leader / Master Fencer (not popular but I love it). The combined defenses of Master Fencer and Master SL make me a very difficult target to hit while leading a group.
You should check out the professions links at http://swg.allakhazam.com/to get a high level look at the binuses, skills and abilites of each.
Thanks for your time.

No saddly at this point SL is almost worthless.
If you want to get the useful things just get 4 0 1 0 and go with that.
other wise your wasting Skill points

I am in total agreement with Blackferne. SL is not a class for everyone. Is it your goal to accomplish an objective as part of a team, or do you want to be a star player?
If it is the latter, then SL is probably not for you. There is not a lot of direct feedback while playing an SL; you do not get the satisfaction of a kill shot against the Krayt. Your skills are useless when you are on your own.
But if you get into a tough fight, like Deathwatch Bunker, your guildmates will fight better and survive a lot better. They will notice your effect on the fight far more than you do.

hah gj blackferne. Promotional posts! YAH!
Also, SL will get better in the next big patch. We heard that from irott, and I can't wait now. Going to have to drop everything to go back to SL! Mmmmm.
There are, just like everyone has said, more reasons to be SL that aren't related to the skills you get. If you think you have what it takes, then sign up today!
Also, Imp SLs pwn all rebels.

The key is to never be alone. Group a pet or a droid. (My probot is my favorite to gruop when I'm solo.) It makes you group leader granting you all your abilities. That with being Master Fencer makes me a treat to anyone.

LIke has been said through and through, it is definately something you have to come to enjoy, and generally accept. My being a squad leader has helped my guild alot in tight spot ( formup is unmatched when fighting giant canyon krayts) and i completely enjoy standing back in the background and letting the melee tanks handle the damage.
The major advantage to being a Squad leader is that, at the moment, there are so few of us; but that's also it's key disadvantage as well. Most people dont really realize how uself +60 terrain neogitaiton is, or just how much +35 melee and ranged defense is. I ahve before finegled cash for running solo groups, and it seems that others on here have had much mroe success than i at that. But with being such a low represented class, your personal character will be in high demand for things it is necessary for; which will lead me to skip to the fourth question.
I feel perfectly prepared for pvp, -ESPECIALLY- when you're raiding a base. I'm actually dropping master squad leadr and going 4033 to pick up mastrer carbines and bh carbines; take advantage of staying in back. The need of my abilities, namely formup and having to set the timer to blow, i dont take that much place in combat at large. Instead i've got a nasty carbine speed and accuracy with a sick kd so that the tanks defending me can handle whatever comes down that alley. As to being a big name in the Civil War, well my crew and i took down a base belonging to one of the largest rebel guilds on the server; the first rebel base taken down in months. That happened almsot a month ago and i'm still getting 'gratz on it. so...that answers that question.
Yes, i'd choose it again.
As to hints Ft Tusken and Geo Caves. You'll cap out real quick
Best of Luck
