I was wondering if the Squad Leaderthemselvesgets the benefit of the ranged and melee defense bonuses when grouped, or is everyone else in the group the only benefactors?

Yes, and only when leader of a group (unless the leader of the group is another SL).

On a second part to that, do SL's get bonuses to themselves when they are not grouped and are going solo? If you don't get them when your going solo, what if you have a pet out and are grouped with it, does that count as a legit group? Thanks

Any group will work, just not solo. Pets and droids do count as a "group" heh.
