Thread: So why all the complaints about SL?

I have been kinda wondering this, but I guess now I will ask it.

What were you expecting from Squad leader?

How does SL possibly suck?

What are you doing with SL that makes you think it sucks?

I dont know, but if you ask me SL kicks ass.

I know that during the last war I was involved in everyone on the voice chat cheered when I logged in.

I know that the other main SL in that war had the same experience.

Now maybe most of you only do PvE stuff and somehow expect that a SL is designed for that. well get off the pipe people. a squad leader is a tool to make the group stronger. The SL sacrafices some of his own personal strength to make the entire group much stronger. SL is a PvP profession. It is the only true PvP profession if you ask me. I mean who needs a SL when every mob in the game can be soloed by the right template.

Are there Specials that need better definition and function? yes I belive there are. However lets look at part of what a SL brings to a group and why it is possibly the biggest difference in turning the tide in a battle or war.

Passive Defences. first off the SL gives +30 ranged and +30 Melee defence. This cost no ham, takes no effort, it is a freebee. In fact it even gives the bonus to the SL himself. This +30 goes over and above the hard cap. No matter what template someone has and no matter how many millions they have, they will never be able to get a Mele or ranged defence up over 150(i am including food) without the help of a SL. To put this in another light we are talking about a 24% increase in ranged and mele defences. If we are talking about one of those quasi PvP clases of BH or Comando, these 30 me and ranged def bring you up to a level where you actually have SOME protection.

Terrain negotiation: not a huge help really, but it surely makes a difference if you are fighting a group that does not have a SL.

Active skills can sway a battle too

/Boost morale. this ability allows a group to work off every stitch of wounds while stuck in a cloner. if your whole squad was smacked down and sent to the cloners just get the TKM to meditate and repeatedly boost morale. this allows the doctors to concentrate on Buffs, and in Most PvP if a Doc is buffing the whole group is subject to another round of killing.(especially in a war and in neutral cloners)

/Form up cures states and gets people to their feet. not sure this is a problem with jedis in your group. and it disrupts doctor macros, but it also can easily players who are stuck on the ground.

/Retreat is one way to chase down a retreating enemy. not great top run a macro, but used sparingly it is a powerfull tool to make sure no one escapes from the cloner.

/volleyfire hey its 1 free shot at a concentrated target. probably the most fun, and funniest skill to use in game. I make a point of sending the victim a /tell letting him know how he is gonna die if I have time. I mean its a free action by everyone in the group besides yourself. and in a group of 20 will make at least 10 jawas chew thru their mind. not to mention all the dot weapons equipped and the near by mele guys. This is a devestating attack I use on Jedis(not so devestating on near masters) other squad leaders and combat medics.

I will edit this post later it is hurried, sorry.

I could complain about Rifleman that I cant kill someone with one well aimed shot to the head(as a rifle would surely kill a person IRL or whatever) just like I see many people complaining that they cant place morters or whatever/

I know they are useful, but the point still being that that is 3 skills out of a decent chunk of skill points. not to mention the fact that /rally is pointless and is counter-productive. And I have seen groups without a SL rival groups with a SL......just doesn't make sense.

True. I'm a MSL right now and I've seen group /w SL's get smacked down by those that don't. 20+ groups? Are you off your rocker? I can count on one hand how many times I've seen 20+ groups. Not to mention the server lag. The profession doesn't suck but it needs 'tweaked' in a lot of areas.

I had come back to squad leader hoping to be ready for the revamp to see what great ideas they were going to take from us and give us in game. I am highly dissappointed that they delayed it and have thus lost the chance to return to something i really enjoy. My account for my squad leader will run out shortly and i am not going to renew it. I hope you all find ways to enjoy this class it has such great potential and has had a great community with so many great ideas to make it even better. Good luck and happy hunting.

Im sorry guys I but in your answers there are absolutely no answers. You just say that you have seen and you have seen that. well I am sure a group of Anchorhead Noobs is gonna get rolled by a group of traines PvPers. I dont want to denegrate the level of PvP on anyones server, but it is possible that with Bloodfin being the east coast pvP server we dont have soft templates out there trying to hang with the big boys.

everyone is rocking 44-45% stun composite, everyone is running 45% PSG in rotating macros. everyone has doc in their template.

and yes a great deal of the population PvPs. we have battles ove 60+ vs 60+ every single night and if there is something special going on those nu,mbers double. we have a war that will be starting soon with over 700 participants. I know how SL affects PvP, and I promise you that if you get two groups of 20. identical in every way. and put a sSL with one and have the other fend for its self. ther will be 20 guys camped in the cloner till they are blackbarred. and there will be 20 guys standing around with *steady* poping off their heads every second.

I am a SL I love Sl and I have to say that this profession is far from broken.

as far as point expendeture. sure it takes more points than I would like. but I am master rifleman. I am very effective on the field. I have some medic, so I am even a little self suffient. I can hold my opwn with any PvP wannabee class like comando or BH or pistoleer. I just dont see why everyone has to complain about everything their template holds. a SL can easily sway the tide of a battle. simple as that.

i love SL as well. i dont consider it broken, just think it needs some work but what few professions do not? it would be nice to add some combat abilities to SL like a special or 2. that's my only gripe. everyone i know loves form up and jedi love terrain negotiation. if everyone looks at professions as role instead of i should be able to solo every damn thing in the game as any profession they would see SL is a great profession. re-vamped or not if the combat balance forces people to group like the old days a SL will be invalueable

i think, squadleader is made as good as the player makes it, i personally make good use of the skills, and on raids "boost morale" works a treat for CMs, and their mind wounds..... the whole problem with the profession is it requires alot of skill points, and gives very few benefits, such as damage migitation, the passive defense is good, and very useful at times, the only problem is --- people can get the same defense off a 50k bio engi shirt. volley fire is very useful in pvp and pve, ive found the group can cut suades through forces if volley fire is in use, also rally can be a very handy little skill when your under pressure eg corvette or DWB

Exactly...

I don't consider SL broken... just underdeveloped.

It was even said by the devs that they spent little initial design time on this profession.

We are looking to make the profession better for everyone.

I am well known for doing Raids and Secret assults and stuff like that and i agree It is how good you make of it....

However a true squad leader needs more tools at his hand other then just /sysgroup spaming... I mean i host large raids with atleast 200 players on each side of the fight... It is so hard to stay in contact and make battle plans its crazy

Ok so the consensus is that SL should take less points, or give more abilities.

I am pretty sure that everyone would be psyched if they could get more professions on one single character, but well it is not at all realistic.

being a Master rifleman would indicate a great deal of time and effort placed into that skill. much like it takes a worker a decade before he can call himself a master electrician or master cabinetmaker or whatever. A person so dedicated would be hard pressed to also be a master in another field. or even in a third field. in SWG some masters have pre reqs like SL and BH, but they are not so opressive that you cannot still master another profession.

As a master SL and a master Rifleman, I still have room for medic. I would be inclined to agree if I didnt have the points left over to get master Rifle. I mean the MBH of the world definately had something to gripe about. but I am not sure if we do.

as far as broken/unclear/unbeneficial specials. well we are way better off than Pistoleer. and even if none of our abilities worked our passive defence and passive terrain negotiation still makes usbattle winners in pvp. The only things I could see fixed are the same every profession faces. basicly make it a little more functional. make all the specials work properly. but there is really not much to complain about. I think the general gaming population in this game is horribly negative.

this professions glass is more than half full.
