This is a little long, but I just wanted to share my first positive experiences as squad leader.

I've been a squad leader for about the last three weeks. I had just achieved my first skill, /rally, the day before the XP nerf showed up. I kept trying to level, but XP was hard to come by.

Now I'm not a power player by any means. I play about 3 hours a day, and spend most of my time socializing or running through cloning stations. I'm far too weak to survive on my own, and I play too little to make Commando or BH, so I had to choose a support class. Squad Leader seemed like a novel idea, even though it's somewhat useless in it's current state outside role playing.

I've lead several groups, but only in group structure. Usually I just joined someone else's group and was made leader, but the originaly leader retained all control.

When I heard the XP was fixed, my first reponse was to head to one of the hard leveling planets, and start a hunting party. I was a 0/0/0/1 Squad Leader. A few tickets later I was on Dathomir. I found a group was already there that was happy to make me leader again, and out we went. About 10 minutes out, the original leader LD'ed.

Everyone started to just go home, but I decided I would pull some role playing and try to keep us together. A few rousing speeches later, we were back on course. We traveled from lair to lair taking creatures that conned yellow and red, and almost no one died. I found the biggest help I could be to the group was to simply pick a target, and '/ss Focus fire on %TT'. The occasional /rally helped in a few tight spots, and I used my other miscellaneous skills like trapping to help some.

After about 2 hours of some of the best fun I've had in weeks, I maxed out my XP at 500k. I appointed a new group leader, and told them I'ld be back after a quick trip back to Bestine for training.

I showed up back at Dathomir about 20 minutes later, and found the whole group waiting in town. After some quick discussion I found out they were all waiting for me to come back. Apparently they had tried to take down another lair or two, and failed miserably. Apparently, without my guidance, it became a bloddy disastrous free-for-all. Everyone tried to solo yellow or red cons, and the entire group was wiped out. After the 2nd time this happened, the existing group leader decided to just wait for me to come back. A few people tired of the wait and left the group and ventured out again solo, or in a different group.

I was quickly invited back into the group, and we ventured out again, and all was well. In fact, most of the people who left came back because of the awesome synergy the group seemed to have. And while no one could explain it, everyone accredited it to my role-playing and simple system messages to guide things along.

Yes Squad Leader is a useless class. But it's a total Role-Playing class. The bonuses and skills we get mean next to nothing, but they're a badge of proven leadership! That's why, unlike most squad leaders I see, I wear my "Novice Squad LEader" with pride.

And along this line, I have to say I really love the new XP formula. I know it's pretty fast XP, but it's no more than any other profession. After the weekend, where I racked up probably 10-12 hours of playing, I went from a 0/0/0/1 to a 2/1/1/2 . I think that's a very acceptable progression. Fast enough to see progress, slow enough to keep "normal" players from instant-mastery.
