I've always enjoyed taking on the leader role in groups and PAs, but I never thought about picking up SL as I heard so many complaints about it during the last months. During the last days I had a few run-ins with high level combat characters grouped with high level Squad Leaders who totally whooped my ass as it was more or less impossible hitting them. I'm also looking into getting Squad Leader to be able to raid bases as it's so hard to find other SLs online. But I do have a few questions.

When leading the group, do I as the squad leader also get the passive bonuses (ranged and melee defense). If so, do I only get these when leading the group, not when playing solo? And if so, would it be enough grouping with someone on another planet or a pet and get those bonuses myself?

My idea was going 0034 in SL (all I can afford I'm afraid), any thoughts about this set up?

LOL.

You are mistaken. The SL does basically nothing.

If I understand your post corectly you want to know if its beneficial to go SL to get those passive defense buffs?

I would say no. The skill points can be better spent elsewhere to provide better defense and offense.

Go a route that will give you some good stat defenses. The pistol Tech line of pistoleer is a good one. Has some good defenses agains KD and such. Though they are talking about not being able to stack these mods, or only making them active when using that weapon.

It sounds like you are a leader anyway... so I wouldnt even bother with SL if your points are spent on other high end combat skills. Im presuming you are a Bounty hunter from your sig? If so, I would suggest going up the carbineer tree. The BH speed mods and the carbine specials are a great combo.

No, I'm acctually a master rifleman. And yes, at present I could probably get parts of another professionsto get much better defensive stacking. But as defensive stacking will go away I would prefer to choose something that might still help me in the future. What I'm mostly interested in is the +25 ranged defense which I heard could help quite a lot, and the form up to clear dizzy. And of course also being novice SL to be able to destroy bases.

Yes I think that the bonuses do apply to yourself if you are grouped...Also I am a Master Heavy Swordsman/Master Squad leader and I enjoy it actually...Its always fun to send system messages like saying Attack and Retreat and stuff...I would say pick it up because alot of people think it blows but they dont know anyhting...

Hope this helps...By the way instead od foing the last tree do the 2nd to last so you get the title of "Commisar".

There isn't an absolute answer to your question, but it seems like the group mods such as the defense mods only effect you (as the squad leader) when you are grouped and more importantly are the group leader.

Yes you can group with a pet.

It's also worth knowing that 'Form Up' will clear your groups Dizzy and Stun. It will not effect animal pets in your group but does seem to effect faction pets.

Additionally you cannot use 'Form Up' if you, as the Squad Leader, are Dizzy or Stunned yourself.

Against Master TKA's, and BH's formups are pretty useful.

/rally and /steadyaim work and help alot. The big problem with the squad leader abilities is that they fail way too much and the mind cost on them is prohibitive. I can literally drain my mind trying to rally my group, even when using mind enhancers. In PvP it leaves you incredibly vunerable to attack as most professional PvPers use mind attacks, (CM mind poison/disease, BH eyeshot, Riflemen Head Shot) The passives if they work seem to help some as well.

/retreat when coupled with burstrun can give your group a 4x movement bonus, great for melee players to close in on your opponents, and with the terrain negotiation line, you can make up for the non-bh fighters lack of mobility in rough terrain.

There are some good skills there, but using them will get you killed.

Ranged Defense is good..but the melee is more crucial. Form up works when fighting melee, + rally when works, everything starts hitting.

And macro a lot of commands with /sysgroup, for heal, support, follow, waypoints, ect.

It's actually really useful, last night I led a group and everything went fast and everyone stayed alive..(except for our swordsman lol, he kept biting it...lag and we didnt see his life drop, haha).

Squad Leader is fun. Last night I got a esteem booster (for our profession). "Nice to see a squad leader who actually leads"..

Just get into it, and see how and when to use your skills, it's good. But for dabbling..those last two tree's would be best. *nods* 0/0/3/4 is good

Squad Leader is all about helping people 'in the future.' I've kept it a long time because I knew it would be one of the few truly awesome professions, 'in the future.'

If you like to lead and not just give bonuses, pick it up. The bonuses aren't as good as some other classes, but I've had MSL for soooo long and wherever I go I usually end up leading the group. People, much less Squad Leaders, that actually lead and don't kill everyone are few and far between.

Anyway, go Squad Leadrs!

To answer your questions without passionate calls for retreat:

1) mods and commands only work when you are the leader of any group, and they do (allegedly) affect you.

2) any group can mean just you and your pet.

3) There is some question as to the mods actually doing anything at all. I personally have noticed no difference in a fight with a a CL 50 mob and a group of 6 while I am leader, verse when I am not leader, for example. However I am just a few boxes into SL... ask a master in-ingame.

4) the bigger your group, the more SL xp you earn - but I have not heard anything about the mods being better with larger numbers.

5) basically, if you are solo, the points you spent on SL are wasted because there is absolutely ZERO benifit.

For Quas and everyone else going into squadleader, or even thinking about it...

Squadleader is about enhancing a natural leaders existant abilities. Giving them the tools to lead a group more effectively + some bonuses to the group as a whole that comes with a profession. It's about coordination and effective fighting by one guy directing the efforts of everyone else. If you are looking into squadleader to get your guild ready to go PVP at twice the odds, not gonna happen. Although squadleader can do this, if you look at it solely for this reason, you just don't have what it takes. If you are the leader who wants to actually lead, this can enhance that ability, and I say go all out on SL, its goodstuff. Otherwise you probably won't have much fun with it because you can't kill stuff better instantly. Personally I dropped all my pistoleer skills to pickup rifles 4 and squadleader. I usually don't even shoot cuz my rifle doesn't do much. If you can handle standing back for a second and watching the battle, seeing where your team is and how they are doing. And then do what needs to be done next, without trying to solo that rogue piket... Try SL.

Wierd how people think a profession sucks because the professions skill is taken from the person playing it. I guess its there aren't very many SWG professions like that, maybe people aren't used to it.

Probably didn't answer your specific questions, but seemed like that already had been
