Hmm... I believe in another online rpg there was a "group level" that would rise as the group stayed together and did missions. I say I believe because I can't remember which one, Anarchy Online I think. What would happen is as the group level would rise a small damage buff was applied to the group and loot chances for certain things went up. This didn't carry over from previous grouping but it didn't require alot of dbase work either.

Just a seed of an idea maybe.

How about rewardinggroups that stay together by allowing them to become more effective the longer (and more often) they fight together as a unit? The basic premise we operate under is that a group led by a Squad Leader should have a distinct advantage overthe samegroup led by a non-SL. This is called a Force Multiplier. This multiplier could be expanded to reflect that players could perhaps over time become evenmore effective whenoperating under a Squad Leader that theyhave followed into battle before, and a Squad Leader's ability to affectunit cohesionunder firecould improve by leading players that he is already familiar with. In other RTS/FPS squad-based games (as in real life) this concept is known as Veterancy. Soldiers get better at fighting the more they fight.Groups get better at fighting together the longer they stay together as a unit.

So then just track player XP (combat, healing, etc.) rewarded when grouped under a particular Squad Leader. Then in the future, those players would get better bonuses (or XP, whatever)when grouping with that same Squad Leader again. Conversely, the Squad Leader's own group bonuses (or combat effectiveness) get better as more previous team members return to fight again.

While I admittedly know nothing about SWG's underlying data structure, I do know enough about general database management principles that it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to track this, given sufficient interest or desire on the part of the Devs. Some caveats:

  • To limit strain on the database, this veterancy bonus could be limited to players of the same faction (or even the same guild).

  • To preserve balance, it would probably be best if this were reflected in very small increments over large amounts of time (like a single-digit percentage per month) with some reasonable hard cap.

  • To encourage use, it should be open-ended enough to allow even a small group of dedicated players to become exceptionally effective if played consistently over the long haul (maybe a 50-100% modifier over six to twelve months).

I am whacked out on painkillers as I write this, but I'd like to solicit some feedback from the greater Squad Leader community before I go to the hassle of fleshing this out any further. Fire away.

Its a cool concept , something that could be made after a revamp like a new addition. This would be an awesome idea to add to SL in the GCW revamp though, having its unique role in the GCW.
