Thread: Strategy Tree
Well personally I disagree with that, since Rangers are supposed to live in the wild, but they need a place to live. The problem is in the name, FIeld Base sounds like a military thing.
Anyways, how about making Squad Leaders similar to Rangers, but instead of making Field Bases they get "Construct Fortification" in Novice Squad Leader and then this ability improves in the Strategy Tree. The Fortification would be constructed and placed similar to a Scout Camp, and would provide a small defense bonus and maybe even a Camoflauge Bonus (maybe) when placed to up to 4 people, and block line of sight if prone behind it. As the Squad Leader improves his Strategy Tree, he gains the option to have 2 fortifications placed at Strat 1, 3 at Strat 2, 4 at Strat 4, and 5 at Strat 5. Further, at Strat 3, perhaps they get an improved Fortifcation that provides a stronger defense bonus. The game server could register them similar to pets, that cannot attack or move, thus they can be targeted and destroyed.
This sort of allows the Squad Leader to create not so much of a fort, but like earthenworks or a makeshift barricade that gives his team a bit of a defensive position to fight from. They would be one use items and have to be crafted each time just like camps.
The Romans way back in the day when moving thier armies around would camp each day by digging a ditch around their encampment, putting sharp stakes in to repel intruders, as well as have a drawbridge, a wooden pallisade (a wall of sharpened logs set vertically into the ground) with archery towers. They did this each day with their armies and still could move 15 miles per day on foot. THerefore, I don't see why a Squad Leader with Futuristic technology can't do something similar.
Sorry for all the posts, just throwing out more ideas, they may be stupid but I'm trying to at least inspire good ideas that can fix this profession with (in my opinion) more potential than all of the other classes combined
I like this idea. Most of what we do in group fighting is pull mobs to a location andambush them. If a SL can create fortifications to improve our ambushing capability, that would rock. As long as we can still fight and keep the fortifications in place. Otherwise no exp for us.As it stands, the strategy line has got to be the most useless line of the entire profession.
The ranger bases can be used by the medics and stuff to get our forces back up to fighting strength.
I think they should also give us Group Camo/Mask Scent in the mobility line. Doctors are such agro magnets...
Mergeall of the Leadership stuff over withthe tactics line, and upgrade the specials to something worthwhile. Then make leadership based on SL missions terminals as I posted earlier, butgive us reduced HAM costs to members of ourgroup instead of the xp bonus and we are all set. At least I will be happy!![]()
And to counter that in a more constructive fashion, modern soldiers are trained to fight using most things at their disposal, and that includes temporary fortifications. I'm not saying build a strategic base with an airfield or something, even in Vietnam Privates were still required to dig foxholes and construct small fortifications like sandbag walls or wooden barricades from trees. Using mdoern materials and the crafting tool, why can't the most military minded class in the game have the option to do something similar?
I say get rid of terrain negotiation, and put a line like "Terrain Familiarity" (bad title, needs better) that provides things like "Dig in", "Fortification", "Ambush", and something like that.
There is no reason not to, we have the same survival prerequisite.
Besides, why should two classes have the same ability? Rangers have camps, let 'em keep em. A Ranger/Squad LEader (like myself) should not have overlapping abilities, they should gain full benefits of both classes.
