I'm thinking of becoming a squad leader today, but before I spend the 7500 combat xp...

Does the Leadership tree actually give you the +10 and +15 melee defense for the whole group, or is that bugged? Anything else not working with this profession?

Last night I dueled someone. Friendly duel, neither of us fired, he just reported his to hit number that showed above my avatar. Then I did /makeleader so I was no longer leading the group. His to hit did not change. I have +25 in both melee and range defense thus far. Whatever they do, they don't affect the to-hit.

It's not clear to me that even if the modifiers did work that they would show up in the numbers above the heads of the things you are fighting. There are a lot of to-hit modifiers that I have gotten and I don't see any change to the numbers above creatures' heads, but I do notice that I hit more often. Hard to quantify that...I'll try to do some testing of this with a friend this weekend...

I'm as mystified by this stuff as anyone, by the way, but is it possible that squad leader effects are negated when you're in a one-on-one duel?

Possible. And we both remained in the same group (my to-hit on him did not change either.) So it is possible the bonus applies even if you aren't the leader. I haven't tried not being the leader and seeing if my terrain movement still affects my group. I do know you can't use your active abilities if you aren't leader.

SOE will be releasing in-game t-shirts for Master Squad Leaders. They will be much like the glasses that you get by buying the collector's box and it will say "I grinded all this XP and all I got was this stupid title" on the front and a picture of a middle finger on the back.
