Thread: Read this and you will finally decide to drop SL
We're dedicating a designer (Green Marine) next week to looking into fixing some of the bigger issues of the smuggler. (Yes, we are also looking at issues with the other professions, the smuggler just seems to be the one needing the most love at this moment).

But I would have liked to see us mentioned.
Anyways, its certainly not enough to get me to drop SL. However, I'm Pistoleer/CH/SL, and I dont know which 2 to master yet. Right now I definitely want master CH, and if SL gets some love I'll just let my pistol slide. Its up in the air until they announce what they're gonna do about SL crapulence.
Smugglers do have some issues. Slicing is broken in the upper tiers and Spice Experimentation does not work. I can see why they want to fix these since ALL PLAYERS can use Slices and Spice. The Underworld tree is useless for anything but faction points, and most of their combat moves no longer work.
That being said, Smuggler is a friggin' GOD compared to Squad Leader.
SOE is kinda in a profession triage mentality at the moment....the professions that require minor, easy fixes are being patched up and sent on their way, while the mortally wounded ones are just being left to die for the time being.
When I read that Smuggler post of Q's, my first thought was in fact that the Smuggler is by no means in as bad a condition as Squad Leader, and not knowing forsure, I wondered how some of the other broken professions compared to Smuggler.
As I read through the thread, I saw that many people began to berate Q for making the statement that Smuggler is most in need of 'Lovin'. The common refrain was "BE, DE, AND <third favorite profession here> IS WORSE-OFF THAN SMUGGLER!". I did not want to chime in and deride Q for putting Smuggler to the front, nor did I want to push the other broken professions to the side and say "me first", so I kept quiet after I saw that some SLs had at least reminded the boards that there is a profession that is so broke that many people view it as superfluous. What I thought was 'really sad' was that different people were listing the same two to four professions that they know are in as bad or worse shape than Smuggler. These people were listing their favorite profession(s) plus one or two that they had never played, but had read about. The sad part was that Squad Leader wasn't even on the radar scopeof these people.
I personally 'may' take Novice SL just so I can start accumlating some points, but I don't view the profession as being worth the expenditure in skill points at all. Assuming everyone takes two or three Scout Exploration boxes, what is SL really good for? Some slight to non-existentbonuses to the groupin combat? What benefit does /sys message to group really provide over using colored messages? Is there any other group-control mechanism beside /sys message that would give an SL an advantage over a non-SL? Whatcharacteristics ofthe SL profession should compel me to become an SL? How does a Master SL benefit a group more than or even as close to as much as a Master BH or CH, for two examples?
On 'paper', I initiallyconcluded that itwas the slightest profession of all, with more one-ability or one-skill-mod boxes than any other profession. I figured at that point that its skill-point usage should be cut in half, allowing those who wanted the meager SL abilities to also take on more skills in other professions, perhaps being able to master something like Pistoleer, SL, and one additional Elite profession. Or at least keep a lot more skills in the base professions while still being a Master Pistoleer/SL.
Then I sought out this board to see what the Squad Leaders were saying about their own profession. Yuck. I find that the majority opinion is that most of the scant SL abilities are either broken, ineffective, too costly, or too prone to failure. Based on the limited communications from the Devs to this board, I also don't see much of a future in the profession. I don't blame people for divesting themselves of the profession in favor of others. It is always possible to reverse course once something changes, but for now SL has little to offer.
Obviously, once you get the prerequisites for SL, you are not much more than a few missions and a few hours of trainer-peddling away from becoming a novice BH and novice CH is even closer, with no trainer-peddling necessary. In the balance with these professions, SL has been weighed, measured, and it has been found wanting. It has definitely become the road less travelled, and that seems to be its greatest attraction at this point. That and the 'really cool nametags'.
To coin a phrase, "Whoop-de-dooo!"
