Thread: So I cant be a squad leader because I prefer melee weapons
Hello squad leaders! I'm a ranger/CH/swordsman and am not very happy with ranger as it is. The squad leader would be something... not more up my alley, because im usually a ranger type guy, but its just more functionnal, to be blunt.
Anyhow, I dont have time to sift through your threads, but I was wondering if a class issue you and/or your correspondant have been talking to the devs about. Namely, the fact that the class is a cookie-cutter template as far as combat is concerned. IE: you CAN go melee if you want, but you still have to pick up novice marksman and the ranged support line. Granted, there is no line that ressembles that in the brawler tree (ie: no line feeding on combat exp, though advanced melee professions have a line that do), so its not just a problem with the squad leader pre-requisites, but with the way most if not all skillsets, advanced or novice, are designed.
Nonetheless, I would love to see this game turn into the true skill-based system it was supposed to feature, and not some bastardised, pseudo-skill-based one, or, if you want to call it something else, a fancy class-based system, thatwe currently have. It would be nice to see melee-based squad leaders, melee-based bounty hunters, etc.
By choosing the SL profession, you are basically gaining SL xp so that your squad benefits from your presence. Unfortunately u don't get the benefits, so your squad needs to help you out, by providing cover, protection, etc. By being melee you have a higher chance of getting incapped and no squad should be without its leader. Not saying that you can't do SL with melee, just that probably safer if u didn't.
melee classes make poor SL's.
As SL you are there to lead and give bonuses. It is impossible to do that when you are in melee, simply because you have to concentrate on your own fight and lose situational awareness (aka, you dont have a view of what your squad is doing, where they are doing it and what the enemy is doing vs your squad).
Gun users and/or creature handlers on the other hand, make the best SL's since they can sit back, give fire support (just target someone and let the char fire by itself or set pets on targets) and have a clear view of the squad's actions and issue SL abilities as needed.
I do very well as a TKA, CH, SL. I usually never have problems getting 100k per hunt or raid, depending on how many people are out there. I let pets tank, and as long as I don’t use specials, target usually stays on pet. If not walk away, let it retarget then get back in there. I have a lot of fun, and don’t have to reclone as often as you may think.

I am a TKA/SL. I figured everyone else was a pistoleer/ranged type and I could pick them up a dime a dozen if we needed one. All I need is a healer and I have the basis for a great group that can kill most anything. Although pets are still better tanks then I am.
In terms of maintaining control, IMO the game is very simple right now. There is not much control needed. As the puller/tank I do control the number of mobs that we fight and the pace of the fight. Its a great place to control a group. I just wish things were a bit more challenging.
I don't use and SL abilities other then the passives. They are a waste of my valuable mind bar.
