I've been an MSL for a few weeks now... and I haven't really been able to tell much difference with using steady aim. It comes into play with a 20 second timer, and just poofs after one attack...
Is there a slight increase? Is it just a single-shot accuracy mod? is it a direct damage boost? What, what, what is it?

Don't bother wth it in my opinion. There is a thread around here that the guys tossed together that gives all the details and expands on what I said...perhaps one of them can post a link.

Mathematical analysis of the current status of steadyaim
For a nice guide you can also look at the Guide to the squad leader where it is also linked again.
Be aware that with SL Revamp, which currently isnt even on TC anymore, things might drastically change.

After some trial and error with some guildmates, and going over combat logs after PvP and PvE, I notice Steady Aim gives a damage bonus to the very next attack for the squad. After that, all reverts to normal. The only time this was ever a noticable postive factor, was in the opening salvo in a PvE situation, versus a Krayt or what not. Also, melee and jedi appear to be getting no advantage.

and that extra damage is negated by the fact that your own attack is delayed. This is only a non-issue int he first attack as you stated. Any other time and group DPS drops because of its use.
