assuming you have to be grouped to get the +25 melee def mod and +25 ranged def mod...

how does that work?

can i be simply grouped with a pet or do i have to group with actual other players?

I am getting SL xp when grouped with a pet. Not sure if that's bugged or working as intended. However, you are gaining more xp the more people are in your group. The SL profession is MADE for grouping with real players, so try to find a real group as often as you can. It takes a while to get used to the special skills and abilities that the SL profession offers.

I'm still trying to figure them all out myself as well.

Yep, just by being grouped, even if it's just with a pet, you get the SL bonuses...

Do you get SL xp if you are the leader of a solo group, and the members are out doing missions while you are in a city?

Nope.

They have to be near you. So you all have to be in the same location for you to get full SL xp.

You do still get a larger bonus for the stuff that YOU kill though, becme the leader of a large solo group and your XP will still go up relativly fast based on the stuff you kill yourself. You won't ge XP for stuff that others kill however.

I got all the way throw Squad Leader my first time by getting a group of people together and doing Enranged Rancor missions. The xp there is pretty good. The only thing that sucks is finding a trainer.
