Thread: possible to get a top 5 list?

Come on guys, I know we all agree that SL needs some adjusting, but rather than being vague and saying we need to be 'looked at' or 'rebalanced' or that we need an SL revamp (which will never happen) I'd like to see what specifically everyone wants to see done to make Squad Leaders a more viable role in combat.

Hey all Squad Leaders out there,


I was wondering if we could put together a top 5 list or something. I'm wondering if we are all on the same page about what is working and what is in need of some improvement.


I think we could use some working SEAs for our abilities (getting a +25 volley fire sea that actually increases group dmg would be great). Steady Aim is crap as far as I'm concerned, Rally could be stronger, our inate group defenses could be increased, I'd like to see Form Up work while we are dizzy (or stunned, i can't remember).


But most of all I'd like to see where the rest of the SL community stands and I'd like to see some action on this forum pushing for some SL lovin!


Here's my top 5 to get the ball rolling:


1. Increase our group melee/ranged defense mods and add group melee/ranged accuracy mods

2. Fix Stead Aim so that it lasts longer than 1 shot

3. Give SLs a better visual for 'painting' a target so the group knows who they should be attacking

4. SEAs / Clothing mods forALL our specials and our group mods

5. Inprove Form-up's effectiveness (this may be fixed if Dizzy and Stun everget fixed)

The first page of this forum is filled with ideas...I'm a sure the following pages are as well.


Can there truely be a top 5 though? I feel each and everyone deserves equal standing, and their are many more than 5.

I've read your (and all the stickies) before and while I think they are great ideas, you have to think about this from the devs point of view. We, and our coro, will probably not get more then a moment's attention from them. And when we have the dev's 2 minutes attention, giving him a book about 'what it means to be a Squad Leader' will get us nowhere.


I think we need to decide what should be done and bring it to the devs, in a clear, thought out, and agreed upon list. I've seen the top 5 list in other professions and I've seen the coro's bring it to the devs until those points got addressed.


I haven't seen an acknowledgement of SL existance from a dev in a long time because this board is abstract, all we do is talk about 'SL isn't useless we get no love from devs or players'. I don't know, I'll go back and read your thread again but I think we need to form a plan and bring it to the devs if we are ever going to get things done... after all, thats why we have correspondents in the first place.

When a dev says that they don't even know what a SL should be....then explaining what a SL is would be a good start I think. In the second post on that thread, I give a breakdown of each point and address what I would like to see current specials do and what I would like to see in new specials. But those are just my thoughts on the issues. Others here have their own ideas as well.

Ok so while I like what you have thought of and posted, I'd still like to see a concise list of actual in-game changes made, displayed somewhere thats easy to find, and easy to read. And I'd like to see all active SLs give their input on what they think needs to be done.


And KJFett3, I didn't mean that line as a personal jab, I think that 'book' is a great starting point to get the ideas flowing, I just dont see any devs sitting down and reading that stuff. I mean, from a programmers point of view, I just want the cold hard facts (change the 3 to a 5, make an exception clause there...) I don't have much confidence in the devs ability to go from conceptual to working in-game.

Top 5? Hmm, hard to decide, my list is a bit longer:



  1. Give us a way to make other people see your passive bonuses. (Be it as buff-symbol or the complete team, be it that you can see it at the screen under CTRL-C, best use both.)

  2. Fix SteadyAim. At the moment using it is a disadvantage. Make it last for the complete duration, not go away after one shot, slightly reduce the windup time and make it give a bigger bonus. (Currently all testing indicates that it gives an accuracy bonus pretty similar to the one of rally, but doesn't give anything else. There should be a point in using it not only with but also instead of rally, so while not bolstering defence, it should help offence more.)

  3. Give Rally a longer duration and perhaps a bit shorter windup time. (So it should be possible for an SL who pays attention to keep the team rallied all the time. If you feel that too overpowered, keep the current rally as it is, but put a "rally bonus" into MSL, which increases duration... and if you feel very cool, make clothing or armour attachments drop with this modifier on it... but i guess i'm going overboard now... )

  4. Reduce cooldown on VolleyFire, so there are no breaks in between. Perfect it would be if the cooldown would only be a few seconds and if you apply it to a different target than the one it's currently on, the old marking (and damage bonus) are removed and applied to the new target. Allows to switch target when needed.

  5. Put higher group defence modifiers into the MSL box.

  6. Make the skill-modifiers "steady aim bonus" and "volley fire bonus" actually do something. The first should increase the accuracy bonus given by the ability, the second should reduce cooldown time (and perhaps action use) of the ability. Add these modifiers into the MSL box, along with the already given ones, to again upgrade the master box.

  7. "Fix" retreat. Currently the ability is useable for anything but retreating. The prohibitive action cost only allows the ability to be used before the fight, in the fight you tend to use the most action the moment when things appear to go wrong and you try to save the situation. So exactly then you won't have the action to use it. (Best solution up to now: make retreat cost almost no action but put a debuff on the SL when activating it. The perfect debuff would be to block action regeneration for 30 seconds, this would rule out any effective fighting while still allowing to retreat. Alternatively you could put a -50% action recovery debuff on the complete team, that would definitely have them running in no time... but probably is too tough. )

  8. Give "Boostmorale" any use, currently it's a totally dead ability. The probably best suggestion i heard on that was that it should put the small brother of "adrenal boost" on the complete team, means that it should slightly increase attack speed of every team member.

  9. Add shock and flash grenades, certified at 3000 and MSL. They should do almost no damage, but should inflict stun/dizzy and blind on targets within the AOE.

This list is longer than the 5 asked for, on the other hand they aremostly small things which could very easily be done. I once had bigger visions for the profession, as had many others. As big things never will be done for the SL, i'd by now be very happy if we'd just manage to improve in small baby steps...

Y'all should check out the "State of the Profession" sticky at the top of this forum. Our previous "Top 3" lists from both May and June are listed there, and still awaiting feedback from the development team. Feel free to go ahead and keep listing your gripes, but be advised I am loathe to start forwarding a whole lot of new or "non-critical"issuesuntil we get some kind ofacknowledgment of the stuff I already have in the pipeline.

Ok, as a master SL i did overlook the pistol xp problem and I would move that to number one on my list (even though it doesnt effect me, that is a big problem).


However, those questions were asked 2 1/2 months ago, and I think it's time we updated the list. On the threadhere: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=squad_leader&message.id=24164most SLs are saying they just want to be adjusted, not Revamped.


And as for the first questionfrom May 2, 2005, "what is being done to ensure our role..." I think that's a question we can answer for ourselves.Dungeons like the DWB need leaders, andSL gives uspassive and active skills to helplead.


I stand by my original post, I think we need a more clear, concise list of what we want done to make our professionbetter/worthhaving.

1. Currently weare rated as a 3 for offense, defense and crowd control. We do not have any crowd control skill at the moment.


Suggestion: Cover fire: Cone attack doing little damage but gives a hindrance to target's rate of fire for 10 seconds.


2. Boost Morale is a worthless skill post CU, as wounds are little factor in combat now. This skill needs to be changed entirely:


Possible suggestions: Make it grant a mind regen bonus for 1-2 minutes. or


Damage done to group members is reduced by 10-15% while under skill. or


Special attack costs reduced for group members.


3. Steady aim needs to be fixed and have its warm up heavily reduced. Currently its a longer warm up then rally.


4. Group passives need to be increased to at least 50 and have a visual to show to group members that they are receiving them.


5. Form up needs to work probably in PvE and PvP (this would require fixing stun first to make it useful to form up).
