First let me say... I'm loving this profession even with it being broken/gimpped!
I arrived on Dath with one of my guildmates (a TK/Doc) late last night to find a small group of professional killers at the terminals looking for something to shoot. After a brief exchange with thier group leader, they decide to join us. A couple more minutes pass while skimming the terminal for good missions and a few others arrive; who I prompty solicit and add for a total of 9 people. None of these people had ever groupped with a squad leader before.
The first couple missions were rough... people were shooting mobs on the way to missions when they weren't aggro'd, they were wandering to close to aggresive mobs, wouldn't listen when I told them what the target was, and took foreverfor us to figure out who had the next closest mission-- very frustrating! But as we progressed... they started catching on. By the end of the nightI had them responding to mysystem messages when asking for distances, re directing thier attacks tohelp out other squad members in trouble, had them travelling in tight formations to avoid aggro, and waiting for my command to engage our targets-- it was truely awesome! Even the problematic people that were bucking my decisions early on got quiet and played along because our group was fast, organized, and very successful.
The funny thing is, I hardly usedany of our "active" abilities. Sure, I used rally a few times (not even really sure if it does anything other than pop a flag by your name and prevent certain non combat activities), as well as the occasional "formup" (to which they responded with "chill out rambette!" until I explained to them what it did)... but the most usefull ability that has the most visible effect is our novice level /sys. I really think that to be an effective squad leader.. you have to know when/how to use that skill (I'm still learning

).
When the night was over and everyone said their goodbyes... I noticed that hardly anyone said anything to me. Perhaps I rode them to hard for a first outing? Maybe they didn't like being whipped into shape? Who knows... but I left to go train with a bittersweet feeling-- I know I did a good job as a squad leader, but none of them really seemed to appreciate it enough to acknowledge me after we all parted ways...

As Istepped off of the shuttle into my hometown of Bestine an amazing thing happened. I received a tell from one of thepickup group members and he said, "Tonight was awesome, pleasecontact me if you ever want to get a big group going again... just let me know when and where and I'll be there!"
I was so happy that I sat there with a big goofeygrin on my face for a minuteuntil I remembered that I needed to reply...
I said, "Without a goodgroup I'm just a carbineer hun, you're always welcome in my squad..."
