Here's a thought. SOE has been struggling with faction pets for 6 months, trying to figure out how to balance them. The problem was a novice could be given 9000 faction, buy and AT-ST, and defeat any elite class in the game. The answer they've come up with so far is to basically make faction pets as worthless as possible. Ah, for the days when you could have 3 practically invulnerable AT-STs at your side 
How about this -- the ability to control faction pets gets moved over to SLs.
Non-SLs: control 1trooper (< 2,000 HAM)
Novice SL: control 1stormtrooper (8,000 HAM)
High ranking SL: control up to 2dark troopers (10,000 HAM)
Master SL: control up to 3 dark troopers or 1 AT-ST
This would give faction pets a place to live. Faction pets could then be un-gimped, so that they regain armor and no longer die permanently, because they are tied to skill points, which not everybody has devoted, instead of time, which apparently everybody has plenty of.
And SLs would get a very obvious benefit to the group -- reinforcements.

Well, if you dig through the posts here and on the GCW forums you'll see that the general consensus is that this isn't what we want. Faction pets should have *nothing* to do with class, and should be affected by faction rank. We lead players, not pets. I do think things like /formup should affect our pets tho, at least the NPC pets (I can kinda understand why shouting "Form up you slimeballs!" might not do anything for a Graul).
If anything, I think a Master Squad Leader should get the ability to pick ranks higher than colonel (thus meaning more/stronger faction pets).

Where exactly are you getting this from? The major threads on this issue show a very divided community with neither party receiving a significant majority.

That would be kind of cool, except that (this is my opinion, i haven't seen or read otherwise) the rebel faction pets have less HAM, and sometimes a lot less HAM than the imperial faction pets. I have no reason to believe that they attack faster or have a better accuracy or do more damage, so this presents a problem to your plan.

Copy from an earlier post of mine, and I was a tad salty when I made it. It is still viable as a suggestion. As for Reb vs Imp followers, the 420pt Specforce guys are equal to the 420pt Storm Troopers. Only big diff is that Imps get Dark Force for 2100pts and AT-STs for 9400pts. Oh, I am a human and I get that for -30% cost. That is right, Imps are racist. Sad but true. If your not one of three races all of your faction point costs are 30% higher, so that AT ST runs around 12k for a Wookie. Rebs have no race modifiers, but nothing to compare to a AT ST or a Dark Trooper. What it comes down to is that most Rebs get their followers cheaper than their Imperial counterpart, but the Imps can get better stuff for a steep cost that is pretty hard to swallow when you lose it.

Lets face it, you will be on at times when others will not be on that you run with. You need creatures... troopers... to give you the benifits for SL. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING makes me more sick than to see some guy running around with a couple of freaking Rancors/Grauls/Killa-whatever-the-name-is and me and my ST medic. Well guess what kids...that Rancor still has Heavy armor and can attack /ANYTHING/ it wants, faction or critter. My AT-ST on the other hand? Got castrated to medium armor and watches me get hammered by that Rancor. Might, just might come to my aid, but won't attack it outright.

One Faction follower? Not good enough. You a neutral? Better make sure you join a guild or SWG gets off their butt and make actual recruitable neutral faction followers. Oh like it wouldn't that bethat hard...like I give a rat's ass about Borvo Faction...if I have it, make it worthwhile.
Here is my 2 cents-
1) Number of followers is equal to Rank+SL rank in Faction points.
That is it, prettyfreaking simple. Your a private, you get 100-200 fpts worth of followers. Split it up any way you want...let people actually buy those worthless 100pt troopers. Higher in rank and higher in SL means you can have more points. Have one or two expensive toys, or a million crappy ones, AS LONG AS IT ENDS UP BEING EQUAL.
God, it isn't a hard concept. Play any point based game and you can figure that out. And guess what SWG, /this/ is a point based game.
