It seems to me that from what I've heard and some personal experience, Squad Leader serves little purpose besides those that want to Role Play a leader with a title above their head... would that be an accurate description, or does it have some practical uses?

Believe it or not Squad Leader actually does have some useful abilities.
Group Terrian Negotiation is great for those special combat builds that don't put any points into scoutting or combat medic.
Steady Aim and Rally can combine to make commando's and pikemen hit alot! Of course after successfully rallying you won't have any mind left for steady aim.
Form Up will clear dizzy and stun effects and get your guys up off of the ground.
And boost morale can keep you out in the field longer if you have a TKM with you.
The passive defense abilities might work, but they don't make a whole lot of difference unless you are grouped with noobs or non-combat professions.
Overall the profession is just not worth the skill points you spend to get it. You would better server your group as a combat medic ora creture handler, or a chef for that matter.
If you PvP alot Form Up will greatly improve your groups performance, just change your yell from "Form up you slimeballs!" to "a" And nobody will be able to figure out that you are a squad leader when you have your novice scout title up. Just beware of the eyeshot and headshot and mindpoison, those will be your nemesis. Well actually they are the nemesis of anybody who PvP's, but you will be especially suseptable because of the massive mind cost of your specials, and the failure rate of your specials. So either you don't do specials, and waste all those points you put into getting squad leader, points that you could have used to get something useful like TKM/master Rifleman, or you use a special or two and wind up incapped and db'd from having no mind left. Either way, squad leaders are too uber to be allowed to live!
NURF SQUAD LEADER NOW! We still have abilities that are can be useful in certain situations! This cannot be allowed!

Well back to the topic:
I don't know any other profession that roleplays as much as Squad Leader. But think about it. Combat professions, what roleplay do they do? Anyone can tote a pistol or any gun and not act a certain way. Docs can roleplay (haven't seen one but maybe a doc that despises weapons because they only cause the hurts they are trying to heal), but who else? Squad Leader is an implied attitude. They aren't tough, not in the description that you would think twice before facing a MSL. But with most people that I've seen agreeing that people that are actual leaders make good Squad Leaders, it implies roleplaying. You don't have to do much to roleplay, but if you lead your squad then you are doing exactly what the profession says. You don't have to use any SL skills to be a leader.

I'd say ID, Entertainer, Musician and Dancer role-play way more than SL do. But, that's kind of the point of those professions. Socialization. Since SL is a combatization prof its just sad that it can be lumped into the combat effectiveness of an entertainer offshot. Might as well throw on a fleshwrap or purple speedo and do the /boostmorale dance for the troops.

So, I am contemplating becoming a Squad Leader, not because its an awesome profession, but because it COULD be an awesome profession.
As far as role playing with cool titiles though, climb up the Martial tree in politician and earn the "Warmaster" title. That is one heck of a title to walk around with
My idea is to add Master Squadleader to that title. I would command 2-3 pets (befriended to me) and 2 AT-ST (befriended also) and be fully buffed with mind pool buff/spice/drinks and stats shifted to be higher in mind also. Then I could send the pets and ST out to harass a bunch of fighters and then concentrate my squad on hitting the combat medics and doctors of the opposing group. With them wiped out, and the pets running amuck, we could easily finish off a large group, and the Warmaster title would fit soooo well with that kind gameplay/roleplay.

Musician and Dancer are on my "list" of professions that make for better Squad Leaders than Squad Leader. Entertainer buffs enhance Mind, Focus and Willpower up to 100% and they can give that bonus to everyone in the group simultaneously. Any 100% buff far outshines our 15% defensive boosts. Add in that entertainers heal mind wounds and Battle Fatigue and we are left in the dust.
