I am new to this game and this is one of my first posts, my third one, I joined the forums tonight.
I don't much about the rules but I was thinking this might be a combination. My main class would be Swordsman. This would give me strength in combat. While my secondary support class is the Squad Leader. And have some Medical skills for healing. Is this a good combination? I asked this in the Swordsman forums too and I wanted to see the opinions of both sides.

While some say that melee and squad leader are a viable combo, I take the contrary view.
First SL requires ranged support which means you'll be taking up marksman.
Second, swordsman is a melee profession which requires you to be up front in the action. This leaves you vulnerable to alot of states that enemies (npc and pc variety) will apply to you. One of teh most valuable SL abilities is /formup and this cannot be used if you are dizzy. I try to keep a distance of at least 21m to keep myself clear so I can help the others.
Third several of the specials are designed for range (volley fire, steady aim) not melee.
Finally I'd say that its always good to have medic.
I don't want you to take that as melee and SL are completely incompatible, but there are several people who love a melee SL combo. And several of the specials and bonuses apply for melee so it is doable, I just think that sl+ranged > sl+melee.

as a melee SL, I agree with you 100%. /formup is one of the most used commands for GDK hunts, and it doesn't help much when I am getting dizzied myself. But in all honesty, if you like a challenge, being a melee SL is definatly that. It does take something of a masochist to do, though.

Depending on how much you want to play that squadleader.
As a master carb Im used to stay a bit behind the group to and try to hit as many targets with as much stats as I can, giving a good overview about how the fight is progressing.
In larger groups and larger battles I almost dont fight anymore, since Im trying to coordinate the group. I'll have a large map (1/6 of my screen), my main focus is on the radar and groupchat seeing whats going on and having an eye on the stats of my group to throw in a /forumup or a /retreat. I sometimes do macro this but it heavily depends on what you are doing with your group.

I am all ready a Novice Swordsman and I have all the Ranged Support Fire skill boxes from Marksman, because I had tons of Combat XP form fighting. Squad Leader also requires the Exploration and Survival techniques and I almost have them. I am a 4/0/3/3 scout. My Marksman skills are 0/0/0/4, I don't use guns but the Ranged Support Fire is useful in meele, it provides defense against meele attacks and ranged attacks. And I am also I medic too 3/3/3/3. If I want to master Squad Leader I realize I will need to surrender some skills.

When it comes to me and my SL, Im loving the Rifleman/Squad Leader combo, I could only dream of what it would be like with a little Medic/CH added. I love having the squaded control and the power of my T21 at 21m+

I played TKM/SL for a while and loved it. I've dropped SL now but might pick it up again after the CU, I really can't decide what to do atm cause it all looks so fun
Being in melee range certainly makes playing the SL role alot harder. When I was TKM/SL I tended to use TKM when im solo and sit back and co-ordinate things when I was in a group. Allways used to group with a pet when I was solo to get the terain neg bonuses, I loved crawling round real fast
