Squad Leader Archive

The one of the biggest complaints with Squad Leader seems to be the fact that the profession doesn't really offer substantial benefits compared to the number of skill points that must be spent on it. Right now as I work my way up the profession trees, I'm torn between my desire to be a Master Squad Leader -and the logic that those skill points would make me amore effectivesoldier if I spent them elsewhere.

Now, the overall feeling seems to be that the Squad Leader profession as it is,playsmore of a support role to augment another combat profession, which is fine - that's the way it would be in RL, but a lot of points forlimited benefits.

But it got me thinking. Why can't there be certain elite professions that would be designed as 'support' or extended roles? Instead of the standard 4 tree system to master, these elite support roleswouldhave onlytwo trees plus a master box. Almost like tag-ons that help flesh out your template and compliment combat skills without having to spend huge amounts of skill points to master. Would Squad Leader not be much more viable for people if they got the same skills for almost half the skill points? It would seem to put the benefit to skill point ratio more in line. Thisseemsto make sense not just fora profession like Squad Leader, but for several other elite professions that are good in theory, but are impractical to master (think Ranger),simply because the amount of skill points requireddoesn't make them worthwhile for the limited benefit.

While i understand the motivation behind the idea and agree that the current SL gives too little benefit for the skillpoints invested (especially if you go for MSL), i'd rather have the profession upgraded, even if it still takes a while, than having the costs reduced and the profession thus being marked as inferior forever.
