I am currently a MBH/M Carbineer. I was looking at switching to a new prof. Can someone explain exactly what a SL's purpose is? Are they any good for combat? Etc etc?

ummm.. as soon as we find out, you'll be the first to know..
Seriously tho, our purpose is to enhance a group's effectiveness, and we do a decent job of it. If you're looking to enhance yourself or for solo-boosts, then you won't find it here. if you enjoy grouping and leading squads against overwhelming odds, then you've come to the right place.

Best way to answere that to yourself is to group with an SL or two in game and see how they work. It depends on the player realy since our abilities are kind of ... blah.. right now. Still, if the squad leader can think fast it's a real help to the group when they manage their action and abilities well. from what I understand, our purpose as it was meant to be, is to set the flow of battle and support our team. Combat wise, with another combat elite profession you will still be somewhat self sufficiant and able to hang in battle.

So, if I go MSL/MCarbs I should be able to atleast hang and survive most combat? Is it any good for PvE on any level to make credits?

Alright,
My main template is now MSL/master rifleman. I htink this template will work well for me. I am not too sure where I will put the rest of my points though..

I group alot (always actually) and I group with a bunch of BH's usually. Well, they have started taking Jedi missions and I was thinking about taking up Sl. I would be mainly support, but what do you guys think of a BH 4/0/0/0 MSL/Mcmc as a template....would that work at all? Im just wondering how useful the SL abilities really are (ok, TR is nice, but how useful are the other abilities). Im currently a MCM/Mdoc.

to answer jassco's question about where to put left over skill points...a little medic and scout is nice. medic is nice to throw down some heals on your group and scout is nice for terrain negotiation and mask scent.

Should I go into the combat medic part of medic? or just the regular healing part?

yes, MSL/M Whatever will be a decent ranged prof and you'll get fairly nice defs (remember on the CU chart we lean towards tank, but not as good as pike, TK, BH). we are not designed to be a solo prof, but with proper know how you should still be able to solo hunt mid level things. solo grinding on mission terminals for cash can get a little tough. but again, with the proper skills you'll should be able to solo grind but you'll have longerdowntime.
PvE seems to be our forte when considering recent patches and hot fixes to our specials, especially Form Up. and we're not Jedi, but that's a topic for a different thread in a different forum. but yes, you can PvP with SL.
just remember, everything you do as a SL, everything you're capable of doing as a SL, is designed to be done in a group. with the exception of some extra defense mods and short term buffs (like 30 seconds on a 1 minute timer) we have ZERO combat abilitity. all specials you'll use will come from another prof. and to answer a likely follow up question: Bounty Hunter, Rifleman, Pistoleer, Carbineer seem to be the best of choices. you'll have more efficient use of skill points with these as opposed to commando or smuggler.

Looks good. I'm MSL/MCarbs and love it. I love the Charge Shot ability since it looks like a thing a SL would do. My sig has my stats, and they work well for me. Because I don't solo very much any more but I do, do things by myself, the Scouting TN and Mask Scent help out a lot.
