Thread: Thinking About Going SL. HAM Costs?

Since I found the pleasure of armed combat shortly after launch, my Twi'lek has been a Master Rifleman / Master CH with some medic complementing the template. I have recently dropped the extremely vexing Creature Handler profession to start work on the Musician tree. I was hoping to provide secondary mind buffsto my PA members prior to raids and hunting parties, but find the grind to be rather dull (And am not pleased with the inability to buff oneself.) I refuse to drop Rifleman, as I have always been in love with the profession, even through the early days of mob warping and broken Conceal Shots. Now I am looking for something to help out in PvP that doesn't cripple my combat effectiveness as a Master Rifleman. Sqad Leader is one profession that I am looking into (on top of a melee profession and possibly commando.)

Browsing these forums, I see mention time and again of the astronomical HAM costs associated with specials that are being used by Squad Leaders in comparison to the benefits that are offered. I've also seen posts stating the fact that different special abilities draw on various different HAM resources. If I am correct, some pull from mind, while others utilize your action. Is there a definitive list of which commands are assigned to a particular HAM bar, and what these costs are? Do these costs decrease as you near master? The reason I ask is that mySpecies hasa secondary mind cap at 450 (I believe), and I cannot migrate my stats any further than they already are.

As you can see from my introductory speech, I choose a profession because I identify with it and it aids my members in everything I do with them, but I also enjoy the non-political (aka combat ) aspects of the game. I already know that SL's are needed for base take-down, and would be willing to fulfill that role. However, Bounty Hunter, Commando, and Bio-Engineer are also needed, and have their own costs/benefits as well. We have aTeamSpeak server at our disposal, so ingame organization is not too much of a problem. Might I ask what benefits Squad Leader can provide to a Player Association, other than being a required profession for successful base raids? How effective is the profession in hunting situations? Large-scale and small-scale PvP situations? Thank you in advance for any help that you may provide.

600 focus & willpower, Group of 18 people. I made form up (leadership I). HAM costs: 709 mind. I know the group was huge, but... Its like order your troops to form up and then, shot your own head with a rocket launcher. Yes, the HAM costs are astronomical, and the fail rates are so high too.

I love SL after all is a fun profession (if your troops follow your orders)

As a Master SL going Rifleman (And dropping carbine to do so) there is a pretty rough hit in the mind area with both classes. To balance it out I suggest making sure to only use commands when you have to use them. Right now there are several SL commands that have little to no real discernable payoff for using besides Formup (You can see the stun/blind/dizzy actuaclly DOES go away). If you have a group of 5 and 1 guy gets dizzy, let him suffer. Blow it when more than 1 gets something so your precious mind is not wasted for when it is /really/ needed.

Steady Aim, Volley, Rally, Retreat (like anyone has the HAM to actually pull this off when it should be used), and Boost Moral have little effect during an actual combat, even though I am a big fan of Rally, you just don't know if it actually helps or not. All hit the Mind and the other HAM to some extent, Action being the other HAM hit, but nowhere near as bad as Mind.

As for Rifleman, you may find yourself limited if your a Conceal Shot champ or a heavy user of Mind Shot. Even with a 1000 Mind, at 200 points a pop average per speacil ability used, including SL actions (If they are successful when used) you will drain yourself very quickly. You will be better off just using your gun with your raw stats with raw damage to add in that needed Strafe to finish someone off now and then.

Either way, you can't just hit Steady Aim or Rally or Volley every 20 seconds and expect to be able to be using Head Shot with every attack. You will learn that you will need moderation.

Good Luck.

Thank you for the information, everybody. I truly appreciate your input. It appears that my combat tactics would suffer severe penalties if I picked up another profession that drained my mind. If I'm attempting to adapt to my enemy and cannot resort to various special abilities because my mind has been wasted on a failed rally attempt,I'm out of the fight and effectively useless to the team. Even with buffs and food nourishing the mind stats, it's the first target of several professions, and drains just as quickly from my own specials. It's too much of a precious commodity to waste If the benefits were more noticeable, I may be tempted to pick up the profession, but until the combat revamp, the addition of the specials bar, and some of the squad leader commands are fixed or enhanced, I'll be working on my commando and meditation skills. I'll continue to check back on these boards though, and (should the profession be given some attention) will be back to reconsider it in a couple of months. Again, thank you for your help!

Rally might be nice but i have gotten away from using it all since i can't see much of any difference in it and the constant complaints of inability to harvest etc.

We have some other fancy skills I like though. /sys commands are basically my most often used commands, with Form up second. In a pinch Boostmorale is a god send skill, (If you don't know how to use it then you should read a lot more about it)

I said this before i have around 500/ 500/ 900 for my ham on a normal basis. both my action and health secondaries are 400. But my ming is jacked up to 1000 focus and 900 willpower. before hitting combat I sip my brandy and am good to go. I have some minimal movement of the mind bar but i have more concern for action and health at that point in time.
