A friend of mine just received novice squad leader... he plays MAAAAYBE 5-10 hours a week. So he is no-powergamer.

Also he was interested in SL when he started playing. Just the other day he was a leader of a group that was more than 3 people. There was 20! And oh was he excited to see the XP. My question is, is there a certain tree to go up that would make him more valuable? From what i have read (just briefly) the skills really dont do all that much. In that case, I would not make any recommendations to him except to have fun and lvl as he sees fit.

Thanks for any help

My all time favorite command is Form Up. I would absolutely get that first. After that I went with Melee Defense since we mostly fought animals, but the thing I would recomend the most is use ALL of your XP whenever you get trained. Don't save it to finish one branch before moving on to the next. A Squad Leader earns XP very quickly and groups have a tendency to disband on you when you max out your XP and have to go get trained. So keep your stored XP as low as possible.

I keep the tactics tree, the ranged defences are ok when running faction missions, and my commando friend loves it when I use /rally and it actually doesn't fail. It really does help his aim. If you usually get into melee fights, the strategy tree will definately be useful. As for the rest, well not sure how useful they are at the moment, especially with vehicles the mobility tree isn't that useful unless someone in the group is running from things in a fight and they don't have the terrain negotiation skillset, and the rest.. well, I dropped the rest to get Master Surgeon so I can rez..

Honestly the skills and buffs arent' that great. Although I do have the ranged bonuses because they sound good. I leveled up the Mobility tree just because I like the title Field Commander. I think that is second only to Breeder as the coolest title in the game.

If he is grouped with any riflemen/TKA/Commandos ever, he needs to get /rally. They will all love him. What rally does is it gives a bonus to accuracy. Very helpful for those low accuracy skills...

or sit down, or rez, or...

My favorite quote is "Crap, he used rally again!" Granted that usually comes out of pistoleers/BH type people.

/rally combined with /steadyaim is good nwes for commandos. I don't know about TKAs, but Riflemen got more accurate recently. We should never miss, and counter that will slower shots, but I'm not a DEV, obviously. (or am I?)

If I were your friend, I would first get /formup, then /steadyaim, then /rally, then anything, as those are the only ones that are worth anything, even if it is just Jack.

Personally, /steadyaim is my favorite. It doesn't do much, but it never fails. Whenever I have the HAM to spair I use it.
