since this looks like itll become the unofficial squad leader thread, i do have 1 question which wasnt answered in the post...

do the passive bonuses granted by the squad leader profession apply to the squad leader himself if not grouped? like + to melee defense, + to ranged defense, +to terrain negotiation, etc. etc.

i know they will only work if the squad leader is the group leader..but if im not grouped, am i considered the group leader of myself?

Thanks for the input,

~jeff~

Voltaris all in all your guide is exceptional (or at least appears to be to all of us newbies!). I would like to comment something on leadership though...

A good leader not only is responsible, decisive and understanding but also is able to command logic at will and has a great amount of experience and wisdom. There's a reason most Generals are old when they take up command - they have experience and know which types of situations to expect, and how to counter or deal with them. Therefore, I suggest you add two new categories to the good leader section: Reasoning and Experience. A good leader must be able to intelligently make decisions, not just make them fast. And he must have experience to be full effective and efficient.

Excellent point.

I feel, however, that those are skils that can be learned. Once you understand the mechanics of SWG and have knowledge of mobs, and just plain putting in time leading groups, much of this skill can be learned.

I would argue, however, that unless a person is by nature decisive, understanding or responsible, they will most likely never become so...

Great guide Volatris. I hit Novice Squad Leader last night on Starsider, but I must say, getting squad leader exp isn't going to come easy the way the game is now. No one wants to group (including myself) to hunt mobs because exp is so nerfed when in a group. We just run around together ungrouped and get like 5x the exp per kill. Hopefully this will be fixed, as no one will want to group to hunt, lol. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the guide, Voltaris. I was really wondering which species to use and which stats to have for Combat Medic, but nobody seems to have information about that. I shot over here and realized that your guide is perfect for me; I can be a Squad Lead/Combat Medic. I was wondering, though if Zabrok or Wookiee would be good for a Combat Medic as well. . .

For that, of course, you visit the Combat Medic forum!

I'm sure you can find the insight you need there.

Thanks for the informative post.

I am planning to be a Squad Leader. I was going to go for Commando, but changed my mind. Now, I can qualify for Novice Pistoleer. Would it be worthwhile to get that and still work on my squad leading, or will I eventually have to forget it? If not, how far into Pistols can I go? Is it even possible to have 2 advanced professions?

And last of all, with the XP being so bad in groups, does this really hurt the squad leader professions? What I mean is, is this a bug, or is it how Sony wants it to be? I remember in beta getting 2-3K per critter on Lok, now those same monsters barely give 2-300

So far my biggest problem is getting the wilderness xp. In groups, everyone that can do it wants to be the tent maker. I even had a guy ditch my group once because I made a tent when he decided it was his turn. Getting the first to levels might not be too bad but I know that last one will be a nightmare

You can easily Master both Pistoleer and Squad Leader, if you don't stray on many other skills.

Also, try finding a crafter who goes out surveying resources. Befriend him and put a camp beneath him while he surveys... much much faster Survival XP without the squabbling.

OK cool, then i'll go ahead and start working on pistols. What I would like to do is have full squad leader, full pistols, and then just have the leftovers in a few basic medical skills just in case. With both of those mastered, about how high do you think I can get medic skills up to?

Go to one of the fan websites and use their character builders to figure out exactly what you can or cannot do.

I dont know about yall, but im taking a different aproach on this squad leader business, i dont want to sit there and be this candy butt sissy while i bark orders at everyone else, im gonna tell everyone what to kill and be the first one there to fight it particle gun or flamer in hand. yeh its too bad i cant be a master sl and commando(279 pts) but at least this way i can also fill my destructive impulses when i cram a rocket up an at=st's socket, and do it with style and 19 other people at my heels.
