Thread: The Agony and the Ecstasy or Respect and Disdain for Squad Leaders
Enix you are a more patient leader than I. I mastered SL almost 2 weeks ago and I've only had to boot 2 players in all that time but I only gave them 1 shot past a /telled warning. Those who verbally dispute me or use all caps or complain incessantly receive a very strong verbal warning right back. I have had over a dozen players act in this manner but when I exercise my "power" as a leader all but the 2 mentioned above have reacted positively and shown respect. In fact 3 of those dozen players are now regular hunters with me. If you are good at leading don't be afraid to verbally reprimand someone who challenges your authority, even in the slightest. Projecting a demand for respect is a powerful tool.
SL is borked about as badly as it could be, this is why good SLs are those with innate leading ability. I have weeded through countless hunting groups and now hunt regularly with the same 25 or so players (those I have found with patience, the ability to follow, and still a mind to think for themselves). The title Master Squad Leader gives us the opportunity to be considered a leader by others, but it is our ability to stay organized and directed that makes us SLs. For those of us that are die-hard leaders one day we may be rewarded with bonuses and specials that are effective and work. Until then we remain the weakest toon in the group yet one of the stronger gamers.
Enix,
I feel your pain my friend!
Comeing from being a guild/raid leader in EQ and Shadow Bane this can be a real issue, but here is my take on it. If your waste deep in one of bad guys in one of these game (esp. in SB where the PvP can get crazy) if EVERYONE is not working together you will lose.
Now if you have a good raid force say in EQ turn out thats 60 some people strong and you are leading, then you have an obligation to the players not only to bag the MoB you are hunting but make it as fun as possible for everyone. If you have one or two peeps messing it up for all the rest BOOT THEM. That my be harsh but I will boot some one in a second. Mess up once i sent you a tell saying what you did and ask for you not to do it again. Do it one more time...I boot you from the raid/group. In SB I have booted peeps from the group and killed them to get them out from under foot. This may be harsh but the bottom line is I would rather have one person mad at me and 50 people getting loot and having fun than the other way around.
Good job showing good leadership!
Bosh Raimi
The world is full of idiots. As SL you have to deal with them and it read like you did quite well.
This is why we should have the skill: /traitor...Immediately DB the player and send him back to clone facility. This is war after all and those who compromise the mission should be put out of their misery. Sounds more like an imperial skill now that I read it, but hey war is hell!![]()

The only thing you did wrong was letting the moron back into your group. I suggest the 3 strike rule
1) First infraction that leads to disharmony in the group gets a private /tell explination of what they did wrong.
2) Second infraction gets a group message warning them that if the offence happens a third time they will be removed from the group
3) Third infraction I kick them, no ifs, ands or buts.
If I see more than 3 lines of text from the person I kicked in the next 30 minutes, I inform that person and my group that I am placing the offender on /ignore so I can concentrate on leading my group.
Mind you I really don't need to do much to lead groups. I basically make whoever's mission it is, the main assist and then I sys out adds, and incommings for people to assist me or the main tank. Occasionally I help with the healing and I try to explain tactics that I think will work better than what we're doing. I've only gotten one person on ignore and I've only ever had to kick two people from groups.

I do the same thing. 3 strikes your out, I made the mistake one time of letting someone back in. But mostly i haven't had to deal with this type of thing too much. I have a very sound regular group i hunt with and PvP with. They knowing how i lead let new people to the group know very quickly how it will run.
