The issue of women in combat really does create some clarity; are you a professional, or are you a poseur? Professionals will respect other professionals; poseurs will allow their prejudices to cloud their judgement.
Also, remember this:
Respect is earned, not given away. Every leader finds this out when they first are appointed to a leadership position.

General Aether: Thats enough! One more comment like that and I remove your guild tag! On a mission you follow orders, its easy!
Moron: But your the leader. Your the General. You didnt give any orders!
General Aether: Emay is the SQUAD LEADER. In times of combat, I FOLLOW her unless she falls or hands over command. I trust my sister in combat. If a general can follow command, so should you!
Moron: BS! This is BS!
General Aether: Then maybe its time for you to move on.
Emay: No no. I think Moron will do better next time .. right Moron? /smile
Moron: Yeah.
Emay: Look man, you know how we work here. You just have to do it. If you would have listened to begin with, you would have completed WITH us. Now THAT would have been more fun and more rewarding than sitting out here waiting for us, right?

Emay! Hello to fellow female Squad Leader! It's very weird because the name I chose for my toon was Emma. So similair to yours... it's creapy.
Anyway, Emma is my second toon. My first (Danirent) was nearly the first Master Doc/Master CM on my server. She has been that ever since. Even when I was playing Dani, I have always been placed in the leadership role. I like playing support toons. Being Doc and CM for the HEALING accept (not too much for the bio-warfair) it is very lead when you're NOT on the front line. In our guild, the leader always type in caps so it's easier to see. Through my leadership, I have become the one of the most respected leader in my guild. Some tell me it's because I always seem to be able to walk away from things where other die. Knowing when you RUN is almost as important as when to FIGHT. That inspired me to make Emma, a Master Squad Leader, shortly after. I have been Master SL for I don't know how long and even with its flows, the group still thinks I am one of the strongest leaders.
So, I guess to simply answer your question... Male or Female at the Keyboard doesn't matter... You earn their respect with your actions. I have devoted Emma to a template that I feel makes the best Squad Leader (stated below) but I know it's not my template that makes me wanted as leader... It's just the respect that I have earned.
