4) Grant extra defences, perhaps state as well as Ranged/melee to those under /retreat

5) Reduce damage output by those under it by an extra 75%, thus still allowing crowd control specials (states/posture changes/knockdowns) but damage attacks would be rendered more or less ineffective

6) Give accuarcy and damage bonuses to the Squad Leader himself

Thoughts, Ideas?

How about a counterpart to that version of Retreat? I'll call it "Charge"

It would go something like this (and I'll put it in your format if you don't mind ):

  1. Affects group members not currently in combat* (excluding SL)

  2. 15 second duration

  3. 5-10 min cooldown

  4. Would increase the speed of those affected by about the amount that burstrun currently has.

  5. Increasethe rangeand damage output by those affected.

  6. Squad Leader movement speed and attack effectiveness is reduced for a short period of time.

* People "in combat" are those that aren't attacking and aren't being attacked.

If planned ahead, "Charge" would give a group a little extra oomph when they come across a high-levelled mob. In preliminary PvP, this would create a "first strike" situation where one group can deny the other group's use of "Charge" by attacking them first. A group could also flank the enemy and pressure a troublesome enemy with a joint Charge attack. The potential consequences to the Squad Leader would encourage him to find a safe spot before he barks out the command to charge, preferably a position where he can oversee the battle and form tactics as the battle rages on.

Maybe we should compile a list of possible tactics so we can have some direction when we're thinking up of ideas for new skills. Perhaps a list like this one:

  • Retreating

  • Charging

  • Flanking

  • Etc.

Of course, there's still the issue of balance, as RenKesson has stated, which should be considered no matter what tactic the skill is encompassing.

Yeah retreat needs to be an option for getting the feck out of there so reducing peoples damage output is perfectly acceptable, however in real life combat and you retreat you make a tactical withdrawl, putting people laying covering fire to allow the rest to get back, then they lay cover fire so on and so on

I just wanted to thank Psionic Maji and RenKesson for their ideas here. Its a big hit with the CURB crowd, and they have some great ideas as well.

Since this wasnt started in the CURB forums, I am still going to be able to discuss this here. I will post some of the ideas from the CURB and Corr threads when I get a good compiled list. You guys deserve the right to throw in your comments and concerns as well.

/salute

And thanks again.

Woot! Thanks Irott. I'm really glad it hit off with your crew. Recognition is nice, but as long as this prof is fixed, I'm happy. SL has always been my first love, and I so want to make it my own again. I want to want to (no, that's not a typo) be a Squad Leader, but I've been disappointed so far, as many of us have, but my heart is still here. People are here because we're concerned and we want to help. If this little idea helps to make this profession better, I'm honored to be a part of that.

Thanks for your response. Keep me posted on this one.

I really think this is a great idea. Not that I'm an SL although I have allways loved the idea of being one just never thought it was a worthwhile use of my skillpoints. SL should be a proffesion where you have to be clever about how you play to make it effective, you need to be adaptable and quick thinking. There should be a large, diverse set of specials, most of which probably wouldnt be used that frequently but in the correct situations they would be indespensible, you would just have to be good at playing SL to know when to use them.

After reading this post I think I'm going to join you ranks!

Unfortunately, not enough SPs to master both.

I know Retreat! is now used as Charge! in 95% of the circumstances, heck thats what i usually use it for also. I'm not sure we'd get both specials, perhaps during the profession revamp something could be done. Currently lets set our goal to fix Retreat!, for the combat revamp, perhaps asking for a Charge! as one of our issues. I'd like to see this thread focus on Retreat! and not get so off topic with Charge!, IMHO. Thanks all .

Also i don't like the idea of a "downer" effect after you use retreat. Make the downer part of the effect itself and have it end when it ends. Like i had a 75% damage reduction to keep it from being abused offensivly, I'd rahter see that sort of idea implemented. People mentionedresting in a campsite afterwards, howeveryou forget thatchances are high that your going to be dead . Who's now going to make this campsite? Some novice scout? (unless you have a ranger with you) Have you seen these things? Too small for a squad of people to be in effectivly.

Thanks again Psionic Maji for starting all this.

Because this idea was started on the "normal" boards will you be allowed to post replies to your thread on the CURB and corr boards here? Or is just that you can continue to discuss it?

Since the idea was started here, I will still be able to discuss it here. I need the entire community on this one, not just those in the CURB. I won't post quotes, but I will summarize the information that I gather from those other locations.

Guys, listen to yoursleves! Do you really want retreat's timer to be nerfed?! Squadleaders are already very rare becuase the skillpoint investment vs. rewards are so low. Hell, the squadleader's 2 best commands don't even work on himself! (formup and retreat) If anything should be changed about retreat it should be made more powerful considering the skillpoints required to be an effective squadleader (125 sp to be 3234 SL). While i'm on the topic, some more useful abilities and bonuses should be given for MSL since there is really no reason to go higher than 3234 SL.

The idea of "balancing" specials by giving them drawbacks is incredibly shortsided. Just look at /boostmorale! Sure it might save a few guys from that fire/disease dot, but it pisses off the entire rest of the squad. Now think of Charge or Retreat lowering defenses or damage output. How long will it take people to figure out they don't want some knucklehead being able to hit one button and screw them in the middle of a battle? Bottom line is that nerfing is not the way to go about "improving" anything.
