Yes, you both get the defense bonus. The best way to see this is by dueling a friend. Remove your armor and have them shoot you to record base damage. Then group your pet and have them shoot you again. Their damage output will drop because your defense has gone up.

Skill tapes for Volley Fire and Steady Aim don't seem to do anything... in fact, they never have. Haven't seen any drop since post-CU, but I haven't been looking either.
