I'm just now starting on Squad Leader, but have always considered myself to be a good group leader in-game. Since rollout, I have almost always been leader when hunting with groups of friends.
Things I believe make for a good Squad Leader (group leader)
- Someone that can split their time 33 percent between watching the groups HAMs, watching the Chat window and watching the events unfolding on-screen
- Someone that can type fast ... (enough said) it's hard to coordinate attacks/group movements/etc. without quick typing skills
- Someone that cares more about the overall quality/entertainment of a hunt or mission for the entire group vs. trying to pickup loot for themselves.
- Someone who has played the game long enough to understand how many of the professions work in-game during combat. I was Master Ranger for the first five months of the game and it was EXTREMELY helpful to examine an MOB and return a quick attack strategy to the group .. i.e. MOB A is 90 percent heat resist, but vulnerable to ACID .. use your ACID weaponary and specials. Ranger is also nice when a group desires to hunt a specific type of MOB as you can track them for the group. Identifying specific HAM pools to attack is also valuable .. I hate seeing groups dropping all three ham bars almost perfectly even only to find out later that members could have used a different special to clear the MOB in 1/3 the time.
- Someone who can quickly access the variety of professions in the group. If there are four scouts wanting to gain survival XP, make sure you identify those individuals to the group and setup a camp plan .. Joe camps first, Mary second, Bill third, Tom 4th, rotate. Trying to help each member of the group receive some type of reward for hunting with your group will prevent future hunts from requiring 3 hour shouts in the star ports to form a group... you can post about a hunt and players will remember how fun it was hunting with your group and will sign-up again if you make the experience really fun for everyone.
- Someone that can ensure time is made available between MOBs for various profession training.
- Someone who can direct the speed of "getting missions" .. organizing "which mission to do first" .. and "keeping the group together from the start of the hunt to the end of the mission(s)". I used to have my groups (always getting 2 missions each) call out ONLY their closest mission when one mission was complete. The teams would typically become so fine-tuned that everyone would just call out their closest as soon as a lair was destroyed ... then as leader I would say ... Bill GO .. and everyone would take off following Bill to the next mission. There's nothing worse then waiting an hour for the group to get missions and then waiting another 20 minutes between lairs to figure out which way to go next and likewise, watching half the group go East and the other half go West. As long as everyone understands from the beginning that all missions will be completed (if time is possible) they are happy enough to avoid arguing over 5 or 15m differences in distance to missions.
- Someone who immediately identifies the group medic/medics and promotes the importance of protecting these valuable members of the group (especially the Rezzer's)
I could go on, but I never intended to make such long post to start with
Thanks,
Asur

I made a post that somewhat deals with the questions you asked, called 'SL and other Professions'.

I am a 0/1/2/1 squad leader at the moment and a 1/0/2/4 bounty hunter - how ever I'm really starting to fall in the love with squad leader prof. and would like to see it through (thus giving up bh). My question to all of you is this... what would be the PERFECT companion profession for a squad leader? (example: Ranger, doctor, combat medic..) I was thinking ranger because then i could track down certain animals for the group to kill... of course my combat skills would be weak but i could be one heck of a leader. Anyway I'll await your replies...
Also I'm looking for an imperial guild that would be interested in obtaining my skills on the Kettemoor server. You can also post your offers for this here as well.

Well as I say in my sig, I'm just a 4/0/0/0 SL, a NBH and a 0/2/4/0 Ranger as well as 0/0/3/0 Pistoleer. Pretty much a Master Dabbler, but I think that the Ranger profession is a great companion for SL. You can lead your group to specific creatures, you can provide them with camoflage, and you can give them the best camps available, not to mention the ability to "rescue" your troops. I picked up Bounty Hunter to be able to use the LLC since Squad Leaders don't get any heavy damage weapons. Again it is entirely up to you and I suggest you go to swg.allakhazam.com and use the character builder to figure out just what you want to use with SL other than BH.

I personally play Pikeman with SL and use it as a Medic protecter. Never put myself on the front line.I only attack those that sneak through front line and reach the Medic Ranks. From in the medic ranks... it's easier to watch over the group and react to events.
I have always thought being back in the medic rank that Combat Medic would be a great addition to the SL. Already need Ranged Support and the area stims would be a very good thing for the Group. That would make you more of a supportive player with not too powerful of attack but that's what SL should be after all. More supportive than attacking.

"perfect" professions: CM, Ranger, Carabeener, CH.
CM - group heal, need I say more?
Ranger - you already stated
Carabeener - AoE stat effects are a godsend. Ranged KD will make your groop fall in love with you.
CH - nothing better than having a big slab of meat to tank.
[edit]
Doctor is also good. Buffing your squad and being able to Rez are great skills for a leader.
[/edit]
I chose rifleman, and it is a good mix between group assistance and solo firepower.
