Thread: Poll: Squad Leader Forum Management

I had an idea to help ease communication in here, but there is a minor roadblock so I'd like to get everyone's opinion...

One thing we all seem to agree upon is that there are a LOT (well, EVERYTHING really) wrong with Squad Leader so it's difficult to even know where to begin. I was considering going "sticky happy" and putting a FAQ at the very top of our forum, but then float about9 threads that will serve as the Official threads for eachSquad Leader ability. The stumbling block is that I'm recommended to only have 1-2 threads floated, but if enough people support this little idea I think we can get away with bending the rules for the overall good of the forum and this profession.

A quick Rundown of the skills to be discussed in separate official threads in no particular order:

1. /SysGroup

2. /SteadyAim

3. /Volleyfire

4. /FormUp

5. /BoostMorale

6. /Rally

7. /Retreat

8. Passive Abilities: Terrain Negotiation, Ranged Defense, Melee Defense

9. Ideas for New Abilities - If you have an idea for a new ability, post a quick summary of it and then a link to a thread of your creation so that it can be discussed. (Fortifications, group tactical specials, etc)

Anyway, if you like this idea let me hear it... So as not to leave a clutter, I'll probably lock this thread eventually so that it will fall by the wayside when it's no longer needed. I just wanted to get some administration out of the way quickly. Personally, I'd like to do this so that it's easier for me to know where to find everyone's ideas to present to Thunderheart...and if TH or a dev comes by here, they'll be able to see where the real discussions are happening.

Not that I think it'll do any good:

I would advise having a non-sticky thread on each of the active abilities (sysgroup, volleyfire, etc) to find out what the community wants. Then, for each thread that has a decent number of constructive responses, use the communities' suggestions to create a new thread to poll (pick solution A, B, or C) which solution we'd prefer. Then create one sticky thread for all of the active abilities indicating the popular solutions.

It might be a good idea to seperate the passive abilities to discuss and poll on solutions, certainly the terrain negotiation issue is vastly different from the passive combat bonus issues.

I'd advise against a sticky thread for ideas of new abilities.I can almost guarantee that it will clutter and degenerate, and then you've got a big ugly sticky thread. With all the ideas on these boards, it shouldn't be hard to come up with a poll for the most popular ideas too, then sticky the results.

All three of those could just go in one big sticky thread at the top, and it's practically already an SL report.

An FAQ is always a good idea. The same day Cap V quit and his stickies with trainer locations went away, someone came here to ask where he can find a trainer. One sticky prevents a lot of frequent questions.

If you're going sticky on us, you could also batch them by tree, as well:

  1. Mobility

  2. Strategy (/steady aim ; /vollyfire ; incl. passives)

  3. Leadership (/formup ; /boostmorale ; incl. passives)

  4. Tactics (etc..)

  5. New abilities

Organizing these issues by tree seems like the best idea. Good thought.

it works best if you host it on a different page so you can edit it on demand and add new info

look at the tk board for an example when ppl ask a noob question you give them the link to the FAQ

Post by tree. After all, how much discussion will each skill actually generate? How many posts of "/retreat sucks" do we really need? This will cut down the number of unused sticky posts.

Thulium,

I think it might make more sense to break em down by skill tree. How many things are there to say about /sysgroup. Wow I can make text appear on the screen. Not a lot more to say about that one.

I would really like to know what each command is supposed to do. Ex. even when I get rally to work, what exactly is it doing?

You can discuss stuff all you want...we have been for several months.

Until the Devs indicate they are interested in discussion, as opposed to just implementing what they feel is right, discussion is quite frankly pointless. Look at every major change the Devs have made and very very little of it has come from discussion on any forums. All the changes come right out of the blue.

Decay, the new HAM, etc.

Nova,

I know that many of these topics have been beaten to death...my point isn't so muchto inspire further discussion of things already discussed but to make the discussions as easy to find as possible. Imagine if you will the mythical day when a developer decides that he's truly interested in improving Squad Leaders and looks in our forum only to find a mess of posts about who's quitting and why interspersed with a couple threads asking which tree to advance in first? ...No sign of any of the suggestions for new ideas or fixes/improvements on the existing skill because we're tired of beating the dead horse so all that stuff is on page 8 of the forum.

Personally, I DON'T want to see that happen.

Also, when I'm asked for reports or information from the community, it'll help me find it quicker too!

don't forget Burst Run Efficiency

How could we live without it?

Seriously tho, I have found this works. It seems to make our Burst Run last longer, and with this in mind I normally use Retreat to actually engage my squad in a Charge when the enemy decides to turn and hit his own Burst Run button.

I like this idea best. And please do what you can to "re-sticky" Captain Vemnox's Squad Leader FAQ (I think it was up to version 3.1).
