Thread: From the Devs: NPC handling does not fit design vision for Squad Leader

Hiya all,

I attended the Hybrid Professions forum at Fan Fest today and was able to ask the original Squad Leader designer a question that's been plaguing us all. I told him that the community is very split between those who only want SL skills to work on players, and those that would like to add NPC-handling skills to the class. I then asked what the developer stance on this issue is.

He (don't remember his name, but he was the original designer of SL and Smuggler) replied that he has read many of the proposals in the IC thread and found some of the NPC handling-focused designs interesting, but that the concept of using NPC pets did not fit the developer vision for Squad Leader. A second panelist, the developer in charge of Jump to Lightspeed content, added that "Squad Leaders lead groups of players," the battle cry of many of us.

So it appears the debate is over. We aren't going to be getting NPC skills, and in my opinion, good riddance! I'm delighted to hear that the developers will be focusing our skills on other players. That alone was worth my $89 fee.

On a side note, the first question asked was about SL XP and whether it would be fixed. The devs replied Yes, of course, and then went on to give a brief description of the goal of the SL revamp. According to the panel, the revamp will completely redo every single skill box in the tree to make each box useful to our groups. Score!

Ah, so that was Green Marine? He seemed a very dedicated and energetic developer, which gives me high hopes for our revamp.

He is the greatest developer... which is why he was put on the JTLS team.

I hope he is going to play a hand in our revamp. I will have to see if TH can put me in touch with him.

Hmm, are you sure that was him? According to the Fan Fest website, these were the devs at the Hybrid panel:

Understanding Hybrid Professions
“Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Commandos, and other Professions that break the mold”
Panel: Dave White, Ben Hanson, Jeff Freeman

Were things changed around, then?

Well you said the "original dev" assigned to SL... Which was GreenMarine.I know Dave White is one of the Lead Designers who used to work on entertainers. And Jeff Freeman is the lead of the Space expansion content group... Ben Hanson was in charge of Medical professions and Armor last I knew.

But this all changed when the JTLS teams were formed. So I have no idea who you were talking to

Either way id like to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief. I dont care if he was talking to little green men, so long as they had a dev badge on and were running that panel discussion. NPC handling would have killed our profession, IMO. This is a huge burden off my mind, thanks.

LOL, little green men, heehee. Yeah, I'm glad to finally hear a developer response to the issue, and am very pleased that this particular dev is so enthusiastic about our class. He brought up the profession survey that the devs ran a few months ago, that we were in the bottom three classes, and that this was a major concern of his and really highlighted how badly we need some help.

On an unrelated note, during the "open discussion" hour when the five lead designers and developers fielded general questions from the crowd, Runesabre answered a question about fitting some class (I forget) into the schedule for a revamp. I didn't catch exactly what he said, but I heard "squad leaders", "revamp", and "need" in the same sentence, so I immediately cheered and started clapping. I think the three or four other SL's there joined me .

Okie, nothing new on SL's today. The general Combat forum was pretty dominated by CM haters, Rifleman haters, Smuggler whiners, etc etc etc. I did manage to meet the Mystery Developer again, though, and saw his badge read GreenMarine. So it definitely was the man himself that I heard yesterday . Silly website not keeping up to date with panelists...

They want to get the main system of JTLS upfirst, add in some space content, then work on the ground/space tie in.

It might happen in the future but not for a while.
