Hey friends,
I've been reading this board for months waiting for some good news.. and Haven't found any.
I've finally decided to just suck it up.. and post my planned template.. and ask for opinions on it.
I've chosen to use the Squad Leader profession for roleplay reasons.. I roleplay a pirate captain, so having the ability to command a group is great.. they're like me first mates! harhar

Anyways.

I've decided to go with Squad Leader 4 0 4 4, Fencer 4 4 0 0, Rifleman 4 1 4 4

My reasons are as follows.

I've decided that my plan of attack as far as PvP goes is to use sniper techniques as much as possible. I know that there are a lot of flaws in this game.. in every profession.. but i've spoke with a lot of people and they've all given me the same basic feedback as to what flaws are out there, and how to avoid the majority of them.

Squad leader is awesome, the terrain bonuses and group run bonuses are great, not to mention the defense bonuses. I would have went into this profession strictly for those things... the commands, broken or not.. are just an added benefit.
I've never heard a good thing about Steady aim or Volley shot.. so i've decided to not even train in the field.. if someone has a good reason Why I should.. I wouldn't be against it.
I don't plan on ever changing my template.. I'm definitely not in this as a hologrind.. especially since the Jedi quest is changing...
I Chose Fencer for the short range combat.. but more importantly for the melee defense that it provides. Also, the Swashbuckler title is great for roleplaying.. so I had to spend the points to get it.

My stats end up looking something like this...
Center of Being Efficiency 100
Center of Being Duration 26
Dodge 30
Group Melee Defense 25
Melee Defense 109
Group Range Defense 25
Range Defense 96
Block 70
Def. Vs. Posture 80
Def. Vs. KO 50
Def Vs. Stun 10
Def. Vs. Dizzy 10
Def Vs. Blind 10
1h Melee Accuracy 70
1h Melee Speed 80
1h Toughness 32
Burst Run 40
Group Burst Run 50
Group Terrain Navigation 50
Terrain Navigation 40
Rifle Accuracy 120
Rifle Speed 70
conceal 95
Cover 30
Rifle Aim 60

Any opinions are welcome.. criticism especially.
Thanks!

The main thing I would say is that Rifleman is not nearly as good unless you take Master. The speed increase is that significant. Other than that, sounds like it would be fun.

Nice...

What would you give up to be able to get master rifleman?

I've heard horrible things about the rest of the Conceal chain, that sneak isn't worth anything.. stuff like that.

Didn't want to waste points in that chain, when there was plenty in Fencing I could use them on.

shrug

I'm a novice fencer/rifleman/SL right now.. so i cna do anything.

Thanks in advance

Remember this template would onlybe valid until the combat balance. Speed will be calculated differently (something important to riflemen) along with many other factors.

Really, what you have is fine. I just wanted to warn you that a Master Rifleman is significantly more powerful than even a 4/4/4/4 rifleman. Because of the speed of rifles, +90 rifle speed is an amazing bonus (and +97 is even better). And Strafeshot2 is really powerful. If you are taking rifleman for the power then the speed (and the strafe2) is quite important.

The only other comment on that setup is that you don't take any of the damage mitigation lines. They can be quite useful when fighting creatures like krayts. I'd argue that you just don't have enough skill points to really make the combo work. I would recommend considering taking Master Fencer and adding in a bit of pistoleer (to stack the dodge bonuses and get some ranged damage mitigation). That would turn you into a human tank and would avoid you needing to use your mind pool for two sets of specials. Overall, I really don't know. I recommend just choosing something that you think would be fun. Your current recommended tree looks like fun. It is hard to say what the best skill tree would be, though. But don't choose your skills solely on the mods involved. It's not nearly as fun that way.

I'm coming back to the profession with only a few skills.

Master Carbineer/Master Creature Handler/Squad Leader0022.

I only retook Squad Leader to assist in Base attacks, but I figure with my last 18 skill points spread in SL that way, I can get Form Up (about the most useful SL ability on the books) and +10 to ranged and melee defenses for my group.

I refuse to give up CH because I enjoy the profession too damned much and from what I am hearing, is due for a renaissance when the revamp hits. Master Carbineer is showing a bit of renewed life with the recent revelation that in spite of the display flaws, ScatterShot2 is about the most powerful shot we have that is functioning properly with near CripplingShot damage but firing at the 1 second speed cap.

How has gaining squad leader xp changed?

Can I join a solo hunting group, and get squad leader xp, if I'm leader of the group?
Or does it only count when I use the abilities?

Solo... group? Oxymoron?

I assume you are talking about players who group up to get better paying missions and go on their own missions by themselves. This is the bane of Squad Leaders everywhere. Though the good thing is you don't get xp from your groupmates unless they are near you. If you want xp... you will all have to stick together.

Easiest, if not the most abundant SL xp you can get is to parallel up Creature Handler. Even at low levels, the ability to self generate xp can speed things up a bit.

A Novice CH can use a faction pet, a combat droid and a low level pet, which (if you don't mind running faction missions) can generate pretty reasonable levels of xp fairly risk free.

I preferred running with players myself, but it made a great alternative when no one else was online. The best xp I ever got was running missions with three Jedi Initiates back before Publish 7. 16k xp per kill. I almost wondered if there wasn't a bonus involved in grouping so many Jedi.

Very cool
Thanks for the advice.
I'm currently a novice creature handler, I will try that
I doubt I will keep creature handler but I could surely train it up long enough to dump it.
does it go pretty fast? creature handler that is.
Thanks in advance again

heh..
funny you should say that.
I absolutely hate those groups...
I'd rather make less money and have someone to fight with than have to hunt alone all day.
guess that's why I want to go squad leader.

Thanks for the info guys..
I'll let you know how this template turns out.
