Thread: Focus Thread: Squad Leader Specialist Titles
The purpose of this thread is to discover the best titles for the Squad Leader specialist trees.
The four trees are:
- Mobility
- Strategy
- Leadership
- Tactics
I know getting Strategy IV gives the "Strategist" title. I'm pretty sure Mobility IV gives "Commissar" (which has *nothing* to do with Squad Leadership). I can't remember the other two.
But forget those, propose your favorite ideas for each title. Get out your thesaurses and history books!
Mobility: Maneuverer, or Maurader
Strategy: Strategist, or Field Marshal, or Commandant
Tactics: Tactician, orCommander
Leadership: Captain
Very nice.
We do need to make sure these can't be confused with faction titles, though.
For those worried about a redesign I offer two points:
1) Given my past MMORPG experience, the likelyhood of us getting redesigned is very low. The "best" we can hope for is that everyone else is nerfed until they are as week as we are. Of course, we would then be at the top of the nerf list...so my bet is that we are more likely to get nerfed than we are to get redesigned in a positive way. This means that if you don't like SL the way it is (or possibly even weaker) you might want to stop playing it now and work on a profession more to your liking the way it is now.
2) Even if we do get redesigned, I'd say we're pretty likely to have the same trees (Mobility, Strategy, Tactics, Leadership).
My suggestions:
Mobility: Mobility is a cool word...it should be in the title...maybe "Mobility Specialist"
Strategy: "Strategist" is good...I don't like some of the other suggestions as they sound too military-like...I'm trying to RP a backcountry guide...I can't imagine using a title like "Field Marshal" for that role.
Tactics: "Tactician" again is good...same arguement as above
Leadership: "Captain" isn't bad...it does have a military overtones, but any team might have a "Captain" so that's OK.
In the end, I'm not too worried about tiles...not even sure I'd turn them on. I'd rather have a reputation that is word of mouth. Titles don't tell people much about what my contribution can be to a group.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily agree that "Commissar" has nothing to do with Squad Leadership, but I would agree that it has very little to do with Mobility. I'd put it as the Leadership title, if I was going to use it at all, but for some folks it has very negative connotations, considering the methods Commissars used to motivate troops in Russia during WWII.
Of course, it could still be a viable title for those who just like the way it sounds, or for the WH40K crowd.
- Mobility
- Strategy
- Leadership
- Tactics
<one set of tittles for those who want military Ranks>
one level past novice SL anytree: Corpreal
Mobility4: Sargeant
Leadership4:Luetenant(sp)
Strategy4: Captan
Tactics4: Major
Master SL: Colneral (sp) like what col.mustard was
then alt tittles for those who didnt want military names
Mobility4: Pathfinder
Leadership4: Patriot
Strategy4: Stratigist
Tactics4: Tactiction
Strategist and Tactictian are fine for those trees, although really both of those trees deal with battlefield tactics, not strategy.
For mobility, I like the Pathfinder suggestion. Other options might be Guerilla or Light Fighter.
For Leadership... It's tough to come up with something that doesn't sound either too much like a military rank or too much like an office administrator. I don't mind Commissar for this one. Perhaps Commandant or Mastermind.
Personally, I think most of these titles sound better than Master Squad Leader. Maybe you should get the Squad Leader title at Leadership IV, and something all-encompassing and generally cooler at Master Squad Leader.
Strategy - Operations (if not chosen above), planner, or strategist
Leadership - Leader, Noble, or Warchief
Tactics - Opeartions (as above), tactician, or Assault (if not used above).
My prefered ones in this would be Operations, Strategist, Leader (Noble a close second), Tactician
For Mobility, since it is not mounted (swoop armies perhaps?), I suggest Dragoon over something such as Cavalier. Generally a "Dragoon" is a calvary man (bantha mount?), but perhaps in this case it would be acceptable for a foot soldier.
ForLeadership, (can't remember what it was for), Commisar does sound acceptable, even with the Russian RL history and perhaps even more so because of it. But what of crack troops like, the Rangers or (dareI say), the SS. Or republican gaurd for the Iraqis. Generally they are almost always more motivatedthan concripts, for one reason or another. But this argument comes to mind, arent squad leader's always in the military per se? I mean, who says they are going on a hunting trip wtith the buds and Jimbo is going to be the squad leader. So there is no reason to get rid of the military undertones, except for exact titles such as captain or general. But back the point, what title? Guardsman has already been taken by advanced range support, and you couldn't say something like SpecOps (**edit** Rebels), so what is left? Leadership is really anaspect of any leader and thusly in order to master other skill paths as a squad leader, you would have to master inspiring loyalty in your own troops in RL. Thusly, a commisar who could inspire loyalty with good or evil, is a good title. But the title I think fits the best, would be "Morale Officer".
A straticist is not very specificbecause generally SL are not colonels, but a low rank enlisted person leading a fireteam. That is why i suggest something along the lines of "Small Squad Strategy Specialist". A tactician could be replaced by "Group Leadership Specialist".
Just my own two-bits, I would go into it deeper but what is the point? The names'll never get changed most likely.
Okay my idea:
Mobility = Logistician (love that word from GW II)
Strategy = Strategician (by extension of the previous of course)
Leadership = Leadician (hey, GW fought his GW and made up some words...)
Tactics = Tactator (you thought I'd say Tactician.)
Master Squad Leader = 90 Day Wonder (takes about that long eh?)
