I got Sid Mier's Pirates! for Christmas and have really been enjoying the game. You have some goals to accomplish, all involving fighting, treasure hunting and cargo running. I'd love to see some of the interactions added to JTL, specifically the ship capture system. You attack another ship and then eventually crash into it to board it, then depending on a morale feature they may just surrender or you then duel the ship's captain for control. Fun stuff. There are times that other pirates or navies will attack your ship for your cargo or because you are notorious enough for a price to be on your head. The only thing I could do without is the dancing, but what good is it to be a famous pirate/smuggler if you don't get the girl?
Highly recommended.

I've played many of the various Pirates games, including that one. You may want to try Sea Dogs as well.
What can I say, Pirates are cool!

Love the game but after I romanced every daughter between St. Martins and Port Royal, had my revenge, found the lost cities, found my lost family, sent my piratey competition to the depths and collected massive wealth as a thirty year old Swashbuckler in fair health... I found myself in the same situation I'm in with SWG.
Haven't managed to find a ship of the line though...
I have enjoyed dancing, as once you get the hang of it (or cheat your ass off) it can be pretty fun. You then find yourself timing when to hit the key so you can get the 'spins' right.

You're talking about the remake, right? Is it any good compared to the original? I still play that one sometimes.
