Hey all... haven't been around much... I haven'tplayed SWG in about a month now... thebattle to master pilot I could not handle as you need far far far far far too much XP and I just didn't have the time...
Anyhow I know this might officially be the wrong forum for a question about WOW, but I think this is the community I best identify with especially with my being a die-hard smuggler... A bunch of my buddies at work are on WOW and one in particular has been bugging me to death to buy it. It's not that I never wanted to buy it, I was plenty addicted to WC2 back in the day... but that's just it. One reason I didn't want to buy it was because I knew I'd get addicted to it. But I've finally been persuaded. I tried not to think of WOW, and succeeded for the most part, but then I thought it's such a great story and I really liked WC2 so if it's at all like Galaxies I thought I could give it a shot. So lastnight I went to THREE places looking for this damn game and I could not find one trace that it was even out! No displays, no markers on the shelves indicating that WOW was even supposed to occupy this certain length of shelf... nothing! It was as if the game didn't exist! Is this game THAT good that places can't even keep it in stock AFTER X-mas? Plenty of EQ2 on the shelves though...

WoW is a good game. It has solid gameplay, missions, rewards and a decent background story. There is nothing I can say that makes it anything less than a good game.
The user interface is easy to learn. Combat is balance, interactive and fun. Crafting doesn't have you biting your fingernails and exploration is rewarded, even encouraged. You feel as if you can just jump in and play. The quests are numerous and varied and have rewards that provide substantial boosts to your equipment and experience progression. Lessening the feeling of a 'grind' when compared to our system here. It also has the potential for compelling PVP, though I would certainly consider it more focused on PVE.
For me though, it just isn't complex. While SWG was a broken chessboard, where I could see the unending potential, I compared WoW to Chutes and Ladders and still find that to be an apt comparison. It's beautiful, functional and fun but it's also extremely simple. Too simple for my tastes and though I played it a great deal in beta, I would find myself bored fairly often. Particularly as the novelty started to wear off around the mid 20's. Crafting has no real variety that I could influence, and all crafters are the same as materials did not dictate the results. Quests started to get repetitive and combat became a systematic tapping of keys (My preferred character was a Rogue). It was pretty as far as the graphics go but I also don't really like the ham-fisted heros. That type of thing.
As you can see, it's not that there is anything really wrong, it just lacks a depth that I've come to appreciate and I guess rely on for my gaming experience. You can't really go wrong with trying out WoW.
It's a great game that I'm sure many will enjoy, it's just not for me.

I have to agree here. Its a nice game, but it got old, quickly. I would find myself stripped of my clothes and /dancing in front of dungeon entrances if I spent more than half an hour in the game.
/dance
/shout STAYIN' ALIVE!
I played a Rogue as well, but hated the fact that I looked like I ate Arnold Schwarzenegger. If character customization is your thing, you're better off without WoW. The only game I know of that beats SWG for that is CoH.

Well, 2 of my guild leaders (5 characters actually) left for WoW and we haven't heard ANYTHING for the past Month. Of course, Like several people, I think some just played SWG beacuse it was the newest coolest, and now they ahve moved on to the new-newest flashiest.
I dunno

WoW is tons of fun, and the new battlefield system is simply amazing.

Just to add to what I've already stated, WoW is a lot like a cross between EverQuest and Diablo. You've got the massive feel of EQ, and the addictiveness of Diablo. It can and will suck you in if you are not prepared.

Thanks to whatever a-hole one-starred me. Jesus, I'm asking an honest quesion. I asked if WOW was as good as it seems, I said nothing extremely negative about SWG; right now it IS a little stale and lacking. I never said anything was super great about WOW and that I was defecting.
Anyhow, my WOW update: 3 more places checked, nary a copy in stock. Holy Jeebus! And none of the places I checked were the EB that was closed. They probably won't have it either, though.

From what I have seen and heard from close friends playing it WoW is kinda like MMOlite. Fast leveling, and fairly easy quest system. The closefriends of mine that played it said it was fun for the first little bit and then got real old real fast. Alot of my guildmates are having fun in EQ2 but no PvP does not really work for me (plus I'm a SW nut!)

Is WoW that great? Yes. Yes it is. It lacks some of the features that Galaxies has now: player housing, vendor/merchant goodness, Tie Fighters, etc but those weren't in Galaxies on day one. What it does have is the most intuitive, fun and most importantly non-grinding MMO gameplay i've ever tried.
The comments about potential lack of depthare the same ones that could have been made aboutGalaxies: DayOne. No mounts, noplayer cities and, if swear filled memory serves, nooperable servers. But the guy who pointed out the spartan character editor was right...you're going to look like a American Gladiator reject no matter what you do.
I'd say its worth a try at the very least. And once more for emphasis...NO GRINDING.

I have been playing it solid, and have a level 30 Shaman. I disagree with saying its more focused on PVE. Yes PVE is excellent and well balanced. But PVP is where it shines in comparison to SWG. The classes seem very balanced (everyone isnt a CM/RM) and you can play on either a PVP server (which means you can get attacked when in enemy territory or contested areas) or a Normal server, where PVP is less of a focus.
Yes you get ganked by players who are much harder than you sometimes (imagine a Jedi Knight taking on a Novice Brawler lol), but so what, theres no penalty for death and you up and on your way in no time. Plus to get to level 60 it will take you alot longer than mastering an elite profession in SWG.
Crafting is done really well. There is variety but its at the top end of the scale when you hit level 250+ which means you have put alot of dedication into it (unlike simply making 30,000 of the same item to master a craft in SWG). It is alot more simple than SWG but its still very rewarding and fun.
Combat is alot more complex than SWG, with having a different mix of players are needed for certain instances or raids. Id say button mashing is much more a SWG feature (spam mind attack).
To summarise :
SWG has many more complex features but lacks content and PVP is a joke
WoW has simplified features but masses of content and PVP is rewarding
