I would make sure that you have the appropriate level weapon (this is very important now) because if you are fighting something with a lower level weapon that is you combat level it will still outdamage you.
At CL40 I would suggest finding an SR Combat Pistol, a Power5 Pistol, or the new Death-Hammer Pistol. All do energy damage and have about the same DPS.
For me, what worked best is solo hunting creatures that are7 levels beneath my level. I'm a level 62 doc/smuggler and the mission terms must be bugged, because on Dantooine I could only pull level 65 missions (instant death). I was working level 55 lairs (vor hunters) and with an inspiration buff was getting 1253 pistols xp per kill.I never ran out of health though I had to heal a couple of times and I used the plain jane 'ranged shot' as the auto-attack with a couple of specials mixed in every now and then.
But never take on any mob that has a combat level lower than 9 levels under you, or you will get just 1 xp.
