Ok, I was sitting in the Mos Eisley Cantina working off some space wounds when a new person came up to me and asked me for advice about becoming a smuggler. Since I wasn't going anywhere I started talking to the person and came to a quandry...how can I give advice to a person to become a profession that is so profoundly broken and abused, yet one I love so much I couldn't stand being anything else. I've been a smuggler (or working on being one) since day two of this game, and love it, but found I really couldn't find anything good to say about it other than you will find your fellow smugglers are a tight and wonderful community.
So the question is, do I lie and tell the person it's great to be a smuggler and do all the cool things we can do or do I lay it on the line and tell it how it is, a broken, neglected profession?

I tell people that if I hadn't already been one for nearly two years I sure wouldn't become one now.

That's a good answer, thanks.
The whole thing kind of depressed me...I'm still looking for the silver lining, but hope is such a pain...

I can't find a silver lining...every day there is some new crap that indicates to me that they have no intention of giving us meaningful content ever.
I'm purely and simply disgusted and just about ready to call it quits. When I do it won't just be SOE I boycott but all of Sony. There are plenty of competitive products for anything Sony makes and I'll go to their competitors first in the future.
I feel cheated and lied to.

You let a potential employee slip from your grasp? The boss wont be pleased.....
Seriously though, if there is any silver lining to the smuggler profession, its us. Those hard core (or stupid) enough to stick with it.

I think at the moment it's a case of whether to dabble or Master.
Mastering at the moment would be severe masochism to all but the most hard-core Smuggler at heart.
But for others out there, there are benefits to Smuggler skills.
You can earn money as Slicer, not as much as a Master, and yeah, you get the weird customers, but you need very little to make money. No crafting station needed - just grab some clamps etc, pitch up in Coro, throw up your tag and you should do business. A great way to spend half an hour.
Underworld 4 faction selling is great, but you do need to be Colonel. I started selling with the GCW patch and made about 3 mil in week...
Then there's the Dirty Fighting. I'll gloss over the feign nerf, but it is still a good thing in pve. Also, Low blow and Last Ditch... with some Pistoleer mods it's an awesome combo - a ranged knockdown and lots of damage with a chance of stun. Not bad.
So really, I'd say at the moment for those who don't feel the call deep in their soul, Smuggler is a good thing to use as support skills if you have the points but probably not to Master...

Rinse, repeat
I discorage people from being smugglers on the idea the the profession is so broken it isnt fun. If I had been one before all the nerfing and lies I wouldnt be one now.

Maybe that's it. Maybe it's the memory of when panic shot worked or low blow or spices were something people wanted. Then again maybe it's hard to let go after I put so much into it, and so much walking.
