This is something I posted in the Core Systems area when a smuggler discussion came up, basically some ideas I had and figured I'd share in the smuggler forums as well with a repaste of what I said so that if there is anything that I said that is of any interest, people can respond to follow up and expand upon it, since it's really just the tip of the iceberg for what a smuggler could be.....
And I can sympathize with the Smugglers. I'm probably sure that even on their best day, they aren't intended and shouldn't be, on the frontline of battle and able to beat Commando's and Bounty Hunters and the like. If anything, Commando and BH should be 2 of the strongest "pure" combat professions in the game, seeing as they are the best trained and battle tested beings that the galaxy can produce. Jedi obviously should be far and away the most powerful, but not so powerful that BH's can't kill them. A Jedi vs BH matchup should be one of epic proportions, much like a Godzilla vs King Kong, if you will. Perhaps BH's should be forced to go through a similar grind as Jedi's?
But anyways, I would think that Smugglers should be a stealthy type, a masquerader at times, surviving on their superior cunning and wits and bag of tricks. Much like a role like a Theif/Assassin class in Dungeons & Dragons. Or a Fixer type character like in the Anarchy Online game where you actually had a role and access to things and areas that all other professions couldn't access. Able to succeed as a crafty fighter, rather than a front-line soldier or shock trooper. Someone who can bring a certain special uniqueness to the group. But not like Squad Leader. Maybe Smugglers able to give a "group stealth" ability, that if it's a group of rebels, to sneak them past an Imperial patrol and troopers thinking they are something other than rebels. Endless possibilities on how to really flesh out the smuggler profession and make it not only very valuable in a group setting, but a survivor in a solo setting. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, so to speak. Heck, even give them JTL abilities, maybe a "feign death" in space to give the appearance that the ship is an old kill still adrift out in space and no threat to anyone. Perhaps even disguised as part of a debris field. The possibilities are endless, they just have to use their imaginations and do it!
