They would have been fired a long time ago.
The analogy is simple and completely appropriate.
Allow me to explain:
SOE basicly goes into contract with the customer to provide a service. Part of that service is to build the world we play in. If any other company had the continual project overruns, they would have been fired or would have to make concessions at the very least.
Even in recent times we've seen once untouchable defense sector contracts get scrapped because of cost and time overruns. I've witnessed myself companies losing contracts because the product they were hired to produce was not up tothe quality standards agreed to.
If a construction company were to build a building where one of the floors was so flawed that they had to continually take apart more of it, that construction company would lose not only it's contract, but more than likely it's license.
So the next time you think someone is being too harsh on the Dev team, or does not understand why people are so upset, think about this. Next time you want to ask us why we are so angry or so pessimistic, ask yourself one question.
Why can they get away with this when most other businesses cannot?

The problem is that you didn't carry your analogy to the obvious conclusion:
They are a contractor that are providing you a service -- and you're welcome to fire them at any point you like. I don't like that option any more that I'm guessing you do, but that's what it comes down to really. We get frustrated and angry, but we still like playing the game, so we don't fire them. We just keep getting angry and frustrated and keep paying our subscriptions.
Now, please don't think I'm saying that you shouldn't complain or should cancel your account. I'm just saying that the option to fire them is there, we just don't like it.

....and quite honestly SOE is a contractor to Lucasarts. If Lucasarts wants to fire them (they did not extend the contract to Japan - they gave it to EA) we would see some changes.

I agree completely. There are further points that could be made as well. We could talk about restituion for an inferior and not as advertised product, as well as a few other things.
My point is simply to point out a certain point of view to those who think that some Smugglers over react.
I had these thoughts during the FD turmoil and chose to wait for things to die down a little before I posted it. It's more directed to the people who have not been around for long, or those who aren't Smugglers and like to come here from time to time.
I'm really not trying to incite anyone with it either, I just wanted to put this analogy/argument out there for people who don't understand why we can have the attitudes that we do at times.

Hate to say it, but Sony and SOE are #1 and #2. It was LucasArts idea, if you remember the one community letter, that got SOE to give in and hire more devs to revamp the game and save it. Wasn't it 20 new people that got hired? By the way, as I hammered away in another post in another forum, you do realize that this game is based in Austin, Texas. Home of Origin Systems. Makers of Ultima Online. And if you do your research, you will see that our newby's in the form of the Studio Manager and the Sr Designer/Content Lead, are both Ultima Online workers. *SHUDDER* I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I played UO for 2 years before it got so wrecked that I was forced to quit. It got to be where, to quote PC GAMER magazine, "the stuff in the game is more important than the game". Rares and unique items were more important than gameplay and content development and the magazine really took them to task as well as one or two other MMORPG's, but not SWG since it wasn't out at the time.
But I see the same thing happening in SWG. Why do you think we are being force fed all this rare crap and rare loot drops? That's a UO virus. SWG never had that stuff in the beginning. SWG was so different from any of the other 4 mmorpg's I played, that I immediately fell in love with it after being very skeptical that it would just be "more of the same". It wasn't more of the same. It wasn't like any other mmorpg out there at the time. Macro's? Bannable in UO, and guess what, fixing to be removed from SWG. Coincidence? HAH! More and more SWG is becoming Ultima Online 2: Star Wars Edition. And I for one am sick of constantly seeing stuff thrown into the game that has nothing to do with star wars. Paintings? Fully within the realm of the Arhitects. So why not let the architects make the money? Resource smelting tools? Engineering 4 or Master Artisan or even Droid Engineer should be responsible for that and be the ones making profit off it. Give them a lifespan or limited charges. I'd be all for that. But I am 100% against having to kill a womp rat to hope to find a part to the painting kit. It's not only stupid, but very ignorant. In the beginning, everything was player made. Now it's where half the stuff can't even be made by any combination of crafters. Rare schematics? Why? Once you learn how to do something, like riding a bike, you just don't forget how to do it 5 seconds after you do it. Give me a break! I know several mechanics. Even on their first time rebuilding a chevy engine to put into their hot rod, they remembered most of what they did the second time around and even was BETTER the second time around since they had learned from any mistakes. Is that the case with these goofy rare schematics? Hardly.
Yes, SOE is just like a contractor. A federal government contractor, many of whom I deal with at work. The govt fire them? HAH! The days of the $400 hammers and $2,000 toilet seats live on.
