Thread: In need of a solution...

So I turn to my Smuggler brethren. This is yet another <yawn> template thread, and I apologize...but I have never nor need t obe now....uber. I just like to have fun. SO here it goes:


Right now I am MS/MCM/0400 Commando. I enjoy this template and like a lot of what it does....except for one thing...defense. My defense blows chunkies and I find mysef laying on my back far more then I would like (FD or not)


So, I am will to sac some of my CM. I would like to at least keep 4004 (I think) for heals and Duet Toss, but the rest can go in lieu of more defense. I was thinking of adding the grenade line of Commando which would boost me up nearly 40 points in both melee and ranged def...or Pistoleer defense tree that would do a little less in mods but would also boost my pistol defense some.


So which would be better? I definitely keeping Smuggler and at least 2 trees of CM....the rest...what better way to get defense at least over 150 on both?


My big burning question for all you number crunchers is this...by dropping MCM I will lose my CL80 and probably end up at CL78 or something. Is it worthwhile to add 40 or so points to my defenses and lose 2 CL's??? Will the multipliers gained by my enemy with me losing 2 levels be greater then the added defense? Would I see a value to doing this, or would it marginalize my gains?

Nah, 34407, but you were close.

I had MS/MCommando/CM0400. Works very nicely and i intend to go back to it once i finally master Pilot. In the meantime, it's mSmuggler/mCommando/TK4000 because there are no doctors.

Mind you, this also supplies a very evil PvP tactic. Consider the combination of Force of Will and Last Ditch...

How do you find your defenses working in PvE? Do you find yourself taking a lot of hits? And those hits, hitting HARD? That has been my experience thus far.

Not too hard, especially with a heavy weapon equipped. Then i barely get hit at all. And my biggest ever hit with the plasma flamer was 5,422 which will dent most things. Looking forward to a Proton Rifle. Heheheh.

Anyway, to talk sense for a moment, in PvE i take few hits and those aren't for much. I have the option to wear either Assault (for PvE) or Recon (for PvP) and not only can i keep myself and my group alive, Infect provides a handy second DoT over the flames.

I know mate - but I wouldnt be my sarcastic self if i didn't say anything.


As for my template - M Armosmith and M Smuggler - or any crafting profession is a great choice imo.


The Galaxy need more Artisans! Keep the prices reasonable and the Resource Prices LOW!

Personally, I like my Master Smuggler/Pistoleer/Marksman Combo. 171 melee/ranged defense, plus enough speed and accuracy in pistols to do 500 dps with just about every decent pistol out there. That doesn't even count spamming the crap out of them with stat effect stuff....when they work of course.

Thanks for all the responses so far, I do appreciate it, and hope that the rest of this post doesn't offend anyone....that is not theintention.What I would like to focus on is not like other template threads...i don't need to know what your template is unless it has the same core as mine MS/4040 CM.


Given that base, what is the best way to get strong defensive mods and will those mods counterbalance a loss in CL from 80 to 78 or so?


The 2 professiosn that seem to fit best withSmug/Cm arePistoleer and Commando. I like both equally. A third profession that fits well is TK, but not as well as the other 2 considering i will be using a pistol 99% of the time (unless I have Commando, then it would be 70% or so)

Hmmmm....


Though I am not a fan of MS/MP templates because I think they overlap a little too much, the thing that isn't talked about is that Pistoleer DOES have a lot of defense. If you wanted to keep two lines of CM you would, as you stated, lose your double mastery and I believe that drops you to CL78 (and you have less hitpoints as well, no?)


BUT if defense is that important to you: MS/Pistoleer 4044, MC 4004 (or whatever two lines you want) gets you a Ranged Def of 190 and Melee 185 when you have a pistol in your hand. That's not bad.


That's 5 points over the MS/MCM/CM4000 temp. BUT again- this guy is going to be Level 80, have 3000 hit points and be able to do considerable amounts of AoE damage (once aoe is fixed).


In the end you might want to consider what it is you like more: Pistols- Toxins- or Heavy Weaps. Because the temps come out with Defs so close it might not be worth some of the sacrafices you have to make.


As far as closing the Def. gap- I would suggest using Air Cake and Pickatta Pie (you know what I'm talking about) and also some synth steak if you can fit it in. Throw it on your tool bar and try that for a little while to see if it can keep you off your back. PvE wise- between that, Root, and some good toxins, you shouldn't have trouble soloing anything.


PvP wise- idunno cause I haven't played it but MCM is still the monster that it was pre-CU that is for sure. I've been on the receiving end of toxins a couple of times now and carry disease food all the time because of it.

Thanks for the masterful insight HOTDOG. I think you really nailed it, and I guess I just need to make the decisions you mentioned. I'm thinking I might be able to do the MS/MC/4000 CM template you talked about. That might do what I want it to. I'll have to look over the skill trees to see which would be better suited to my style.


I have not tried the food/drinks yet, but was compiling a menu this morning that might be beneficial to me.


One question, which you mentioned, but didn't give a definitive answer for: Which is better, CL80 3000 HAM with mediocre defenses or CL78 2700 HAM with medium to slightly high defenses?

I would say CL80 but not because of the CL-

I had a guy that was CL 70 give me a REALLY hard time the other night- he died of course- but it was VERY close because he was a good player.


I say a CL80 because Master Boxes actually mean something in the CU.

Take a look at the prizes in the Master Boxes- For Commando, the Plasma Flame Thrower is a biggie not to mention the skills and the Proton Rifle (that is still there, right?- so much moving of the weapons it's hard to keep up).


Anyway. Master Boxes are worth having. T

Thanks Tevin, so i went home for lunch and tried a respec I think i can live with: MS/4400 Com/3400 CM/ 0004 Pistoleer. What this gave me was a 220 melee defense/ 205 ranged defense when holding a pistol (i think that was right, both over 200 anyway).


I still end up with the Toxins I use most, the specials from pistols and smuggler I rely on, and the LBC that I enjoy blasting stuff with (with the AoE capability). That in addition to the defenses and armor certs, I think I can be happy with this template. The best part....I remained CL80 with full HAM (2899 because I am Bothan)


I will lament not having the FT or RL, not having Paralyze and some other state toxins, and not having some of the basic pistoleer stuff, but I am certainly happy with the results right now. Now I just need the time to play it and see if i like it.
