Thread: Mobs breaking concussion shot and warping to your position

Subject describes it pretty much. I'll hit a mob with concussion shot, root it. And then about 1 time in 3, the mob will 'warp' to be on top of me. Sometimes I actually see it jogging to me. I was attributing this to lag between the mob's actual position and when I where I thought I rooted it, but was curious if anyone else is experiencing this? I've taken to changing positions a few meters to either side now of where I was standing when the root took effect and this seems to address the issue as the mob warps to or charges the spot I was standing when I rooted it.

Confusing message huh? I hope someone understands it and confirm its not just me.

I don't think this is a lag issue at all. I find it happens all the time to me on Kashyyyk. I'll be hunting MOBs on the canopy levels of the trail and target one that is across the chasm - so normally he'd have to run all the way around the edge to get to me. I +root+ him from 65m out, again this is from across a chasm, and it sticks, then the root breaks and he warps directly to my position. It's happening instantaneuosly, no stuttering, no lag-type issues at all, fluid as could be. I've tested this fairly extensively to see if I was just standing in a wierd spot, or perhaps unaware of a traversable path, but nothing seems to explain it other than /bug. I can repeat it without fail, and have filed a /bug to this effect...no response yet.

it's not lag in the traditional sense, like where your frame rate drops to almost nothing.

it's positional lag, meaning our SWG clients are not updating the mob's positional appearance to match the server's position.

I know this is semantics but it has always kind of bugged me. Lag was a slang term for a high latency (ping)causing your pc to lag behind the server. It has since been basterdize by those who don't know much about computersto mean anything on a computer which slows down. Whatever, that's the nature of language, to evolve. So to that end, I've decided to specify lag. System Lag and Network Lag. System lag would be where your computer is having a hard time processing the data and seems to slow down. That would be those times when your frame rate goes to sh-t. Network lag would be what was talked about here. Synchronization with the server. It would also be things like high latency causing the same thing but whatever the cause, the problem is with the network, not with your system.

To that end, I believe this problem isn't entirely network lag. I think that's part of it but it's always seemed to me as though concussion shot doesn't work as intended. If you read the description, it says the root is supposed to break if any damage is taken. The problem may lay in that some bit of code is conflicting with some other code and you're getting anomolies in the program.

Yeah, gets me too. I never know whether it's a typical swg bug, or some bizarre kind of phenomenon designed to keep +rooters+ on their toes

no i know exactly what you're talking about.

you'll root the target and start shooting it only to hear that "grunt" sound and see you're taking damage when the mob appears 20m away!

then when you finally kill the mob, it magically slides towards you and stops right beneath your feet.

from what i understand it is a positional lag problem. and i dunno if or when they plan on fixing this, but it's a big deal because if you can't tell how far your target is from you at all times, how can you fight efficiently?

Yeah, its a positional thing.

Somehow though Icconcussioned a Melee guy, and he kept hitting me until I got 900m away, even at 800 I was still taking damage.... And I was on a speeder....

Your correct, this is a lag issue. Our SWG clients don't sync up with the server well. Here's what happens:

You root the mob, but it's not really "there". According to the server, he's somewhere else when you rooted him (like right on top of you), and after a few seconds he'll slide to his real position on your client. It's the same problem that causes melee professions to get the "You are too far from your target" message when they are trying to attack something right on top of them. It's really several meters away. The REALLY annoying instance of this is when you are getting hit by a mob that appears to you to be a safe 25m away. It's very hard to tell which mob is hitting you and where he is at.

Here's some tricks:

1) Keep moving after you root something, and tell your party to do the same. They may look safe, but could very well have several mobs on top of them.

2) If your getting hit, look around for the mob thats running its "attack" animation, but doesn't appear to have an enemy next to it. Look it spots you've been recently. That's probably your culprit.

3) Have someone use a knockdown attack (like the BH Underhand shot) after it's rooted. Knocking down a mob also requests an update from the server about the position of the mob, and will cause it to fall down and do a funny slide to it's real position.

I hop the devs are currently working to fix this problem, if it can be fixed. Any response from them would be great.

I suspect you are correct. There appear to be two types, and the one I was describing was the warp. They just appear at your position, usually centered on top of you. A second one, I'll buy as network lag, since I actually see them walk - albiet with a /forcerun + /burstrun pace - to my position. The first one I'm certain is a bug. The second I've suspected is just server/client sync. I'll start bugging these and maybe Wes can find an answer for us?

ya but to be able to run across a chasm is not positional lag - thats just teleportation.

It got to be more than lag, I have had mobs warp 3-4 times during one root. Sure one warp can be a lag thing but the next in a totaly different direction no...
