Thread: Smugglers and Factions

is it just me or shouldn't smugglers generally be pretty nuetral? Han didn't seem to eager to join the rebellion even though he disliked the empire. Yet a whole branch of the smuggler tree gives bonuses to only smugglers who are in a faction? That doesn't make any sense to me. Allowing a level 3 or 4 underworld to trade faction items and smuggle between coverts and overts with no problems seems more "smuglier" to me.

Since I'm not a REAL Smuggler (wink wink), I need a little help:

In all seriousness, now, I want to know how most smugglers view the faction points. I know most of you have chosen a side. I for one, switch back and forth, depending on what the guild needs or what missions I'm doing. But for a pure smuggler, what is true RP way to go?

Money is what drives a smuggler, and it doesn't seem like a good investment to buy up the ranks to get someone some fp every time you get a request(obviously). But, it also makes no sense for the pure Smuggler to be loyal to a side. I suppose there is a balance though, where someone might stay a Colonel, only for the $$$, but in RP or in any of the gameplay, doesn't play the faction role.

Any comments?

Since when do smugglers have to make sense?

RP - said smuggler could have been burned by one side or another for any number of reasons, smuggler could be in love with someone in that faction, smuggler could have friends in said faction and he/she is loyal to them, smuggler could actually believe in what one faction is doing over another (lol)or said smuggler could be getting paid very, very well by one side.

RL- $$$ baby it's that simple I can make a ton off of faction (well from time to time) and my rank gets me the best rate. Alsomy guild (and all my close friends are Rebels)and I hate working for the "Man".

Bottom line is be your own smuggler, if that is someone who jumps sides for the best price, great. If it's a gun, food, med's, suppliesand peoplerunner forthe rebels, wonderful. If it's smuggling secrets the empire does not want the population or rebels to know about then good for him/her. If it makes sense for you it's what works for your Smuggler.

So much for a Smuggler revamp, maybe they should just rename us, it would take less time and be easy to do.
"Useless" would be my first choice as a name suggestion.

of course at this point there is no reason to revamp anything. SOE should just shut the game off.

This is actually a good question and discussion point. As a smuggler I think that we should be factionless, or rather pretend to be what ever faction we wan tto be depending on circumstance. That means we would actually be able tosmuggle items past Imperials or Rebels depending on what we are carrying. We could build up faction points in both Imperail and Rebel factions hopefully to a point where we could walk into Imperial or Rebel headquarters and take missions, rewards, etc.

But wait, that sounds too much like a real smuggler - forget it.

smuggling = roleplay, have to live with that for now.

or

smuggling = generic encompassing term for dealing fp, slicing, and selling spices.

either way, its not smuggling. but its what we got.

It makes sense to me to be against the Empire, since we're always trying to avoid Imperials, but once you join the Alliance I wonder if one can still be a Smuggler.

Faction points are a waste. If there were a story line and it meant something then maybe. Early on it looked like there was something going to come out of faction and factional operations, but it was to great a development challenge. It took me two years to decide I need to learn how to do it and once I did I could see no point. I am wondering why anyone wants to buy points they get you so very little of value in RP or just gaming.

The second thing is that it is so hard to do. You and the customer go to the NPC source, you go overt PvP buy the credits and deligate them to your customer then go back to the paying status. Ouch, why not just vendors. Oh this is smuggler content, I forgot.

I'll disagree with the part about it being difficult. I love the fact that it's a high risk act that we can perform. At any given time 5 Jedi can jump you while going overt. For the big FP sales I pay a few friends to go overt and hang out with me while the transaction takes place.

The faction point thing is kind of stupid if you ask me. I went ahead and became colonel just because so I could sell faction if I got a tell, but other than that I don't go around trying to sell it because it's such a PITA. Most of the guilds that do the pvp thing have their own smugglers anyway, and independents like me aren't going to make a killing no matter how hard we try. Then there's always the afk faction farmers selling faction cheaper than we can.... why do you even get faction from something you only get one point of exp from?

Anyway, I started out with the intention of staying neutral and maybe just doing some light alliance work on the side, but the IMP PvPassclowns on myserverthat used to camp the terminals under the TEF system made me change my mind.

As far as making money as a smuggler, I make loads more just by killing a few krayts and selling the loot to jedi and weaponsmiths. I used to be able to make some decent money slicing under the old system, but we all know how that turned out. I'd sell more faction, but having to go overt every single time means I need to go to a secure spot to protect myself, and not many people are willing to go with you to the corner of the galaxy just to get some faction since they don't have to be overt themselves. Spices... no money in that, because only a few people use them. Booster blue seems to be the new hot spice, but even then it doesn't sell near as much as artisan foods. Smuggler right now is nothing but a RP profession... as the profession itself provides very little to the game.

I only had trouble with ganking jebay twice. Once when I first got smuggler (was sloppy) and once a couple weeks ago. That time I saw Glow-boy coming, concussed him at around 40m (cyber arms), waved, hopped on my speeder and rode off into the sunset.

Got paid... got the typical jebay tell.... got one more idiot on my ignore list.
