First off, I think removing this was a terrible idea. There should be a risk involved with slicing. The Devs have agreed from the beginning that there should be a risk involved. Removing the risk entirely completely undermines everything they've been saying, not that it's all that surprising.
So here we are stuck with a bunch of tools we don't need anymore (AUKs, WUKs, molecular clamps, etc... not Jedi) so why not put them to use? You could even make it a precision laser knife, since these come with 10 charges, so you wouldn't have to carry a bunch of extra crap in your inventory. Your best weapon breaks in combat? Pull out one of these tools and reset the slice to default crafted settings until a smuggler can repair it.
Sure, your weapon may break while in combat and you'll fumble around trying to reset it but if you're prepared, you can mitigate the havoc this would cause. And after all, there's supposed to be a risk involved right? Besides, this could work in your favor sometimes as well. What would be better than your opponents gun jamming or vibromotor shutting off at a critical moment during PvP, suddenly swinging things in your favor?

The only thing better is being the smuggler that sliced it in the first place. Talk about Karma.
Concusion Shot, Pistol Whip, DB.......
/tell stupid Oh by the way, that slice I did for you at 10K.. it's going to cost you 20 to fix. See you at the cloner.

Another solution, would be for a slice from a smuggler to have a counter on how many shots it can go before breaking. Somewhere in the highthousands would be good. That way, if its low, you can plan ahead and get it repaired, restoring it to full before it breaks down randomly. There would preferably be no decay in these situations, so techniquely there would be nothing wrong with getting it repaired regularly, but if your gun breaks down in the middle of combat somewhere, you can't whine about it because its your own damn fault! As it is, your gun with break down in combat no matter what. Because, well... How else would it break down?

I thought of this idea too but it didn't seem like much of a risk really.
