I just made a new char after being thoroughly disgusted with my BH. I would like to try Smuggler but in its current state and after reading these forums, they sound as bad as BH. Should I even bother?

YES!!!!!!!!
this is one of the more fun professions to run thruogh plus one of the most lucrative at this time (other than DOC) After while it can get tedious but definitely worth the try.. Real good money maker.

I agree, it is fun. I was a smuggler for a long time. Though it just got too much waiting for the revamp.
But if you haven't already done it then definitely give it a go.

After bring a smuggler august last year, I can say, you will slice and sell faction points. That is all. Unless you have master pistoleer or 0040 BH your specials are useless in PvP, kinda useful in PvE, but no on high level mobs at all. Right now it is a waste of points IMO, I would encourage you to try it, but don't expect a lot. In fact, expect very little. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this profession will not smuggle until late 2005, so if you can wait that long I would suggest you try something else until that time. Grab the pistol specials and some pistoleer and go wait for a jedi to kill you. Honestly? Find another game.

i would agree that the Smuggler is a very good money making profession. i have been a smuggler for only 2 mos now and have made good money in the process, and also will be awaiting the revamp that it sounds like will never get here. call me dumb but some day it will be here and i will be ready and waiting.

I would say that it's worth it, but that's just me. It's probably one of the most social professions, and I've long since decided that the real content in this game is the player base.
It's true that you won't be a PvP god, and you probably won't be a high level mob soloing mofo with it, but you will be popular when your friends want faction or they get a new weapon/armor.
I gave up on PvE a while ago and smuggler can still do something in a large PvP group...at least with the right additional professions.

I wil also say it is worth it, I have made decent money and I am also a master swordsman so I can kill high lvl mobs solo.

If you're a combat oriented player, stay away from Smuggler unless you want a few extra specials to use along side pistoleer. The Spice market has gone to crap on a lot of servers thanks to food buffs. If you want to stand in front of the starport and make a shipload of credits people are always looking for someone to slice their weapons, and selling FP is extremely lucrative.It's the first profession I mastered, and I haven't dropped it because I'm waiting for the revamp, and grinding the slicing tree stinks. If your goal is to make a lot of credits now until JTL then go for it, but if not hold off until October, and check it out.

It is a profession similar to BH- in that it may be nerfed, but to hold the title Master Smuggler garners a lot of respect.
