Thread: Way to make spices useful

This may have been suggested already.

But a way to make spices useful, and not compete with chef food, would be to give them unique ability bonuses, such as combat damage, mitigation, whatever. A stronger ability effect than chef food would then justify the spice downer and give smuggler spice a better place in the game.

Just my thoughts. What do you think?

Combat damage mitigation..... isn't that sort of like SynthSteak? So you want a Spice that does the same thing as a Food, but stronger to justify the downer.... how does that not put the Spice in direct competition with Food?

Well I do not know all of the chef foods =) I was just picking examples.

But my main point is: If spices go heads up against chef food, spices will lose because of the downer. But if they have something unique which chef food does not, then spices are useful.

One suggestion is to have different ability modifiers not found in chef food.

Back when chef foods were originally revamped, my thoughts were thus:

Spices should remain as they are now, exclusively in the realm of boosting stat points.

Food, on the other hand, would be the special ability stuff. You'd still have Bivoli and Sythsteak and that stuff to increase you abilities, but the stat point bonuses of canape and brandy would be left to spices.

That would makes food and spice distinctly different and both useful.

Serious: Well, why not just add an addiction effect? Make the effects greater, (so you could actually make some money off the stuff) and then make it so that if they use it too often, the affect is lessoned and the downer is increased. (they would have to buy a different type for awhile to become unaddicted to that type)

Silly: Or, for more fun, make the use cause slight wounds like it does in real life and perhaps make there face more wrinkled if they smoke too much or make it so they cant burst run if they over use since their lungs are fried.

From the way they're talking spice itself is "supposed" to become scarce. They're talking about making it from stolen smuggled items, and getting rid of the spices tree altogether (which i love since we're smugglers and not Crack House Operators). I'm assuming (and yes i know what assuming does) that they'll change the properties dramatically at the same time thus making them worth more and at the same time less abundant.

Of course the above scenario all hinges on them ACTUALLY doing the smuggler revamp, infact this whole thread hinges on that.

Oh, and i did mean to say that you have good ideas. i just don't think they're going that way.

Nah, that'd just make spices even less usefull.
