Thread: A proposal to improve Community Relations for all professions

I have made it a point to read through most of the profession forums. Professions that I count myself a part of and those that I have yet to experience. There seems to be one underlying problem that binds them all. The communications between profession and development team is transparent. We as players can "see" the ideas of our fellow gamers go up before the developers, yet what comes back in return is vague, and unfortunately sporadic. To some, it gives the appearance that our pleas fall on deaf ears. I feel that the key to a better game is through better community relations.

In the Smugglers forum, we have had "State of the Profession" posts, information passed down from our correspondents to the players. Yet, due to the restrictions placed on ourplayer representativesto the developers only bits and pieces can be mentioned. This is not enough to slake the thirst of knowledge. Not enough to convince some that that our ideas have been seen. I can only ponder how frustrating it is for some correspondents to see the great things that are going to happen, yet are unable to pass this down to the general population. They must sit back and watch their friends frustration build, and their anger cultivate into a jaded harvest that is reaped when those people leave the game.

What I amsuggesting is that all professions receive at least a weekly update, a feature as to what development is doing for our specific professions. Something as simple as "Today, we discussed how we would like to implement a new special into {blank} profession. Good ideas were passed around such as {insert ideas here}." Even something trivial such as "Our team is working non-stop on the Combat revamp. Greenmarine has made a wonderful replica of the river walk in San Antonio out of Pepsi cans while trying to figure out......".
The exchanges of ideas and discussion in the Correspondent forums could be posted in this feature, just to let us know some of the responses development has given to our ideas. A separate thread created by the Correspondents for feedback could be made, in which we as players could comment on the feature.

We gamers are not asking for entire completed "this is what will happen" documents before you post to us. We simply would like to see into your world of development. We understand that nothing is certain until it comes freshly patched to us. We know that even then those patches are subject to change. We are only asking to be a part of making this game better, to see visible results that you are listening, and to see how you work.

We as gamers need to understand that development work is work!. Work to make the game we play more enjoyable, and to put food on the table of the dev's families. Sometimes they are limited by situations beyond their control such as NDA's and we need to understand that. We need to realize, that if they agree to this type of open flow communications then it becomes our responsibility to present constructive, positive responses that help rather than impede the creative process. We need to work through our correspondents as constructive gamers rather than flaming mobs if something appears that we do not like.

Things happen in time, and patience is paramount. If we all work together, we can accomplish much. If we squabble among ourselves and with our developers, then we are doomed to stagnation. Progress is moving forward. It is how we move that dictates how fast we will get there.

To those that read this post, I ask that you bring this to the attention of your friends and correspondents. It is only together that we can make this happen. This is our game, lets all work together to make it a little better.

LOL,...its a slow week at work. I am kind of like a maytag repairman. Unless something is broke, I don't have much to do but think

I noticed your last response as well in the previous thread after I had just posted. If we could get more and more people to think like us, these forums would be buzzing. Developers dropping by with a idea, Wes sharing some of the things they are currently hashing out in cor. forums based onour communitiesideas. And when it spreads over all the forums, this game would take a turn onto something epic.

Communications and understanding, you could build great things with these simple tools.

That's why i try to promoto my vision of things, but we still have the problem of the devs not answering, the ball in in their camp, and they just don't want to send it back. All the letters or props we can make are useless if they do not show their good willing on this issue.

I understand they have no obligations of feedback towards us, but it would be so much better...

At the moment, when a friend asks me if it's worth subscribing to swg, i tell him to wait, it's not the moment, and i tell him this despite the fact i'm more and more lonely wandering alone on Kauri. If I had something to tell him, if i knew that there are things to come i could try to bribe him into coming, having the argument it is fun now, it will be even more soon, and we have a great communication towards the dev team. Alas that's not the case, so i lose friends, and SOE loses paying customers.

Great post Gost!

I would love to see a weekly update or at least a reporting of discussions that go on with the profession.

However, I can see the development team (when I use the term development team, I specifically exclude Goliath ) have resistence to it for 2 reasons:

1) There may have been no discussions/work being done on the profession and any update that went "Hi guys - did nothing - cheers!" would be met by flying venom and gnashing teeth.

2) That by talking about the discussions they reveal plans which aren't technically feasible to implement - yet get the hopes up of the profession. When the NDA on the sandbox team is lifted (if ever) I'm sure they'll be able to say "The revamp was great - but man I wish they kept xxxx in the game" and then forever afterwards people will continue to ask "Dang - why can't you bring xxxx back like you had in the sandbox"

After the reception Goliath got (sorry - wound is still fresh I know) If I were a dev, I'm not sure I'd want to implement this.

Now, with all that said, I think the Devs could implement a stategy of posting information they know will come to be - feed us small nuggets, and when they come true, and when they can develop a track record of success then they may want to broaden their approach and cautiously advise future big plans.

Cheers
Dat

Thanks Dat!

And you brought up 2 very important points:

For the first point, maybe bi-weekly or at least once a month would be good. And it doesn't have to be an entire document. Maybe the progress of one special, or what Wes is discussing on the Correspondents forum with the developers..just a snapshot. I think it would make us all feel a lot better seeing things moving right along than sitting in the dark. Even if not actively working on our prof exclusively, there are probably things that do relate to us..such as the Combat Upgrade.

The second point is would have to rest on us the end users, the gamers. Like I said, its going to to take all of us to make this happen. We are going to have to learn to understand that the developers dreams are just as big as ours. Sometimes too big to fit into small schedules, tight budgets, and technology which hasn't caught up with their imaginations. And when they fall short as people do, we don't wait at the bottom of the pit torip them to shreds.

Its a risky proposition for dev's and players alike. We will encounter bumps in the road, but I think once it becomes established we will be a tighter group in the future.

Excellent idea Dat. I can see taking small steps first, to prevent stirring the pot in case of set backs. As I said before, we also need to make sure we don't get stirred up and that we do understand these are tentative ideas at best in some cases.

I know this kind of thing has been implemented elsewhere and works well; The developers that work for CCP (creators of EVE online) write blogs of their activities in developing the game for their community to see. I think something similar would be a great move by SWG's devs, however I doubt this will happen
