There's a great article over at CNN

about the orignal trilogy. Some favorite quotes:
studio executives in the 1970s worried that the character itself was indecent because all he wore was a strap of ammunition across his chest.
"I remember the memos from 20th Century Fox," Hamill said. " 'Can you put a pair of lederhosen on the Wookie?' All they could think of was, 'This character has no pants on!'
I guess the studio executives won after all...
Also:
So it's OK to love "Star Wars," but the people who created the films have this advice for the die-hard galactic geeks: lighten up, have some fun.
Maybe Yoda isn't really a genius, maybe R2-D2 was kind of clunky ...
Hamill says maybe there shouldn't be too much nitpicking or overblown reverence.
As the Skywalker actor put it: "How can you be so serious on a film where you are dodging explosions and running away with Sir Alec Guinness on this side and an eight-foot monkey on this side, and the eight-foot monkey is the one flying the spaceship?"
Check it out. It's a fun read.

You need to change the target attribute in your link tag to href to make links work. I've done that in the quote above so that link should work now.

Honestly I would not have a problem with the changes, except for one reason. GL says thatr he will never again release the original, non SE version of SW. For someone that considers himself a 'student of film history' I consider this a gross diservice to the fanbase and to film history buffs.

Lucas was on Charlie Rose (PBS chat show) a week or so ago and basically said that the purpose of all the pictures has always been to build a movie studio that could fund it's own movies. He wants to make more movies like THX-1138, American Graffitti and other more experimental stuff. It's also why that Lucasfilm has announced a Star Wars TV series and why they're floating rumors of Eps 7, 8 and 9. Lucas said in the Charlie Rose interview that other people will be doing those.
He had some financial set backs because of a divorce and he took a break to raise his kids so it's taken him a little longer than he thought.
As to the "gross disservice" issue - the changes he's made are pretty minor, who shot who first notwithstanding. Basically most of the changes he made give the films a more epic scope. More aliens, more stormtroopers, more spaceships, improved effects. It's hardly worth all the agita and angst. They're still fun to watch and 100 times better than Eps 1, 2 and probably 3.

I have the VCDs. Quality aint great but they are cool to have. Got the all the stuff in the right places too.

I'll have the originals on DVD soon enough. It's good to have a techie friend with the THX original versions on laser disk >
