Thread: Novice Smuggler/Relative Newb to SWG seeks advice:

Hail all - let me start off by saying it's been a fun reading through this forum off and on for the past month or so and absorbing the information herein. I realize coming into the smuggler prof that it is in asad state, but I can accept that since I know the hand I'm being dealt coming into this love/hate relationship.

The advice I seek is basically template oriented, but there are a few other things bouncing around in my head as well.

First things first:

Brawler 4/0/0/0

Marksman 4/0/0/0

Novice Medic [I can't foresee not being able to at least use B stims]

Scout 1/0/0/0 [ /harvest ability and min terrain neg.]

Master Smuggler [yes, I'm aware that this is a "waste" of points in the eyes of many]

that leaves enough available points for me to take master in either Pistols or TKA and then I can take 2 lines in the other w/ remaining points [hope that makes sense].

Basically, I need opinion[s] on whether it would be better to take TKM and dabble in Pistols or vice versa. I'm about halfway through pistoleer and on my way to TK Novice. Statistically it would make more sense to me to take MPistoleer and TKA 0/4/0/4 to make the most of the path I've chosen to travel down, but as the title states I'm relatively new to the Galaxy and have yet to master a single prof. From what I can gather it seems general consensus is that pistoleer sucks, even at master, and that it might be better to take TKM and then dabble in pistol. Meh.

*My machine is not spec'd to run SWG, and my financial situation won't allow me to upgrade or purchase a new machine anytime soon. I do get some time at a friend's house to play on one of his supercomputers on the weekends, but that is limited. So for the most part I lag-lock while entering cities and major gathering places, which also means that gearing my char for strictly pvp/pvp'ing as my main activity in SWG is out of the question. I'm more comfortable at the moment just playing the PvE/community end of the game and interacting with my RL friends who play SWG as well [5 of us total].

*I've read some interesting posts on the "triple master" skill set and originally I thought I might like to go that route but I realize that being able to harvest and heal [even if it's not /uber] is more of an asset to my friends whom I play/associate with.

*The obvious oversight and neglect of the smuggler prof is disheartening, but I'm used to that sort of treatment [former UO player ]

*Bugged slicing/exploit slicing seems like a pretty big issue - I'm not planning on opening myself up to public customers unless they are willing to RP along with me or are friends/guildies. Hopefully they'll ALLOW me to slice for them rather than opting to partake in bugs/etc. [my friend is rolling a M Armorsmith/Weaponsmith atm]

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my ramblings & for any input/insight you can add to this.

Welcome Chance,

If you ask me (and you kinda did ) TKA is the more uber of the two profession (TKA/Pistoleer). However, having played both I enjoy pistoleer more. I like having multiple weapons, and having to pick the right one for the right job I also think (with lowblow and last ditch) its more fully integrated into the smuggler profession. But either of these profession would serve you well.

If you go with only two trees in pistoleer ... hmmm ... I guess I would pick the speed / accuracy trees. But thats just me ... seeing "miss" float above my targets head drives me crazy.

Some things you might consider:

Teir 4 Meditate in TKA heals wounds for you ... even mind wounds! You might consider dropping Novice medic for it. I think that will net you a whole extra skill point

Also terrain Negotiation SEAs are fairly afordable (comparatively speaking that is) ... so if you find yourself hurting for skill points you might try getting a handful of +1or +2 Terrain Negotiation SEAs and dropping scout. That would net you a whopping 17 skill points ... however you wont be able to harvest.

I'm a smuggler / musician so I myself chose to take the less uber road in the end it comes down to what skills do you really want and will you have the most fun with. I'd love to pick up more pistoleer myself ... but so far I cant bring myself to drop musician even though it's the wise choice from a template stand point.

TKM is much better for PVE and PVP compared to M Pistol, until the combat balance at least. TKM is imho much easier to master compared to pistoleer, and so I would recommend taking TKM, then doing the defense and speed boxes in pistols. at least then you'll have last ditch and lowblow, and i think some decent pistoleer skills anyway.

And yea, if you're not going to triple master definitely grab as much exploration as possible. If there's one thing I miss having the triple master its being able to run up a hill.

Either go for simply the defense line in pistoleer or master the prof, because pistols are hellishly slow and innacurate without master, and even THEN you need pistol attachments depending on the speed of your weapon. At master, you get 74 speed in total, and you need approx 94 to cap LD on a 3.6 speed DE-10 (Just a random number here, de-10s can be faster or slower).

I dropped my ability to heal and harvest long ago, because theres nothing quite like the feeling of having three masters all at the same time. That too, 3 of the coolest-looking (even if 2 of them are half broken) profs out of the whole lot.

I'm TKM / Master smuggler with pistoleer dabble and I'm pretty happy with it. I would suggest getting medic 2000 if you can, as it's the bleeds that get me when I'm fighting something that takes a while to bring down. If you go this route, the key areas in pistoleer you want are the last two lines, for state defense and a little extra melee defense. TKA meditation is great, so if you go the other route make sure you pick it up as well.
