Thread: Slicing 4 as good as Master?
You posting this here makes N'Joh cry

Is it true slicing 4 is as good as master? I see there are some bonuses in master for armor and weapons but wasn't sure. Didn't want to make a decision til I knew the real deal.
Thanks!
You needMaster Smuggler to slice an item (no matter if weapon or armor) to 100% customization. At Slicing 4 you can only reach 75% (or maybe it's 80%, not sure).
The smuggler FAQ is your friend. Read it, learn it, live it, love it. Otherwise you risk being told things like this:

For that reason I had always (well, since the slice revamp) connected these skill mods with customization level. Although I'll admit I never added up the numbers, and given that I already was Master before the slicing changes hit, I never was in the situation of not being able to do all slices under the new system.

Everyone onmy serverknows that Captain N'Joh Sonik is the Best Master Smuggler on Tarquinas. Yet this was posted here.
My feelings are hurt.
Thanks for the info. I was a Smuggler before the CU, before all these slicing changes. I have decided to pick it up again, and I see now that Master offers some exclusive slices. So in that case, I will return to master this profession.
Thanks!

Correction noted, and no offense taken. After taking a closer look at the Smuggler skill tree again it's obvious that you are correct. However, that makes me wonder what the Slicing: Armor and Slicing: Weapons skill modifiers are there for. Because these are the only thing that you see in the Slicing branch. Nowhere is it noted in that skill branch that at slicing level x you get the ability to perform weapon or armor slice y. All you get are these numbers.
For that reason I had always (well, since the slice revamp) connected these skill mods with customization level. Although I'll admit I never added up the numbers, and given that I already was Master before the slicing changes hit, I never was in the situation of not being able to do all slices under the new system.Which still leaves the question: what is the point of the two Slicing modifiers? Do they actually have an effect on slicing, or are they just a leftover from the old system and SOE never bothered to adjust the information shown in our skill tree? That wouldn't exactly been unheard of, entertainers also had a bunch of non-functional skill mods for months after the CU...
The reason it's there, as I recall, is the original intended system, that broke down on the TC so much they came up with a last minute Plan B, which is the system we now use made more of a distinction between master and slicing 4. So the reason there are holes in the story/documentation as it were is because some of it was written with the system that was scrapped a couple days before it went live and hasn't been rewritten. In point of fact the new system was pretty much thrown together a few days before going live...if you go back to the posts around the time it went on TC you will find some more information on it.
Yet another promise broken by the devs....imagine that.
What was removed was the breakage. That was all screwey so, even as part of plan b, it never made it into live.
The original intended plan never even made it to Test Center. If it broke down anywhere it was on the "dev" server and instead of taking the time to get it right they pushed the Plan B out.
Then again, they tried to say all the smuggling missions had left were some dialogue inputs and they'd be ready and we never saw them. I think they tried to short cut the whole deal that was proposed and realised they botched it up big time, and then pushed slicing plan b out so they could say they gave us something.
GM's imminent departure could have played a role as well if they realised he wouldn't have time to finish the system as planned so they had him do a quickie in order to finish before his time with the company was done.

Didn't know that about the original not making it out of the dev server, so then would that make the current system Plan C?
Geez it just keeps getting better and better.
/bangs head against wall
I wonder if the oodles of money Serenity made last weekend might open the devs eyes to what we are all hungry for...or better yet, maybe Universal will produce a Firefly based MMORPG.
