Let me start of by saying that I was once a master smuggler (that title sucks btw) and gave it up because it was pointless as it stands now. I have recently came back to the proffession because my quild needs a smuggler, if not for that I wouldnt be smuggler now or would even consider becomeing one again.
I think what sony was trying to get here with a smuggler classwas awith thief - Sony needed a "thief" class and smuggler is their lame attempt to bring that to SWG.
Now with that said lets take a look at our proffession based on a common senseprospective.
1: Slicing: Smugglers have never been able to inprove a weapon or armor in our recorded history. They just didnt have the skills required or the expertise needed to balance a pistol , rifle, carbine , knifes, swords, polearms, armor or what ever. If someone neededsomething special created or alteredin aweapon or armor they almost always went to a master craftsman to have it done. Not a smuggler. If you need the speed or damage increased on a weapon - common sense would say you would go to a master weaponsmith or master armorsmith not Han Solo. Nice try guys but think it through.
2: Spices: Were not chemists. Face it spices are drugs in one form or the other. If you needed cocaine the only reason you would go to a smuggler was to make use of his "smuggling and contact" skills in order for him or her to aquire it for you. Make spices available only from NPC's and the only way one can aquire them is to approach a smuggler and hire them. Heck this might even make use of our underworld tree.
3: Underworld: Wheres our underworld contacts ? hiding under a rock ? this whole tree is pointless. Oh yes we can avoid scans, so can a commando if he pays the right people, and who would that person be ? you guessed it a smuggler , but wait we have no underworld contacts, hmm so much for that idea. Comeon sony add contacts that only smuggles can use- thesecan be anything from a disgruntled imperial captian in bestine that will for a fee make you "immue" to sensor scans for a limited amount of time tospecial missions from Jabba for those master smugglers out there.or a chemist on naboo that can for a fee make spices. Just be creative and you can fix underworld, after all underworld should have been the key tree in this profession.
4: Combat, well its not bad the way it is , you might want to add some melee moves to balance it out but overall its no bad.
Overall I think the devs had a good idea but theyput to much into it. The key to a smuggler proffession is in his contacts - Its all in who you know and at the master level you should know some very shady people, as it stands we dont know anyone. Smugglers dont improve weapon or armor performance, they dont make spices, theyjust smuggle and know who to talk in order to get what we need. its all in the CONTACTS.

Agreed, kinda.
I can see us as a bit of 'jack of all trades' in terms of illegalities. I can see us making street drugs and slicing terminals, and even 'retrofitting' guns.
You're right though, a WS would be a better gun-modifier, and a Doc would be a better drug maker.
Why we don't have med components as the basis for our drugs still confuses me, unless it's a concession to interclass dependancy.
The underworld tree should really be a staple of the class, and it's virtually useless now. BH's should be able to (but not necessarily required to) get info from us on bounties and the like. People want to buy drugs or hot goods, they should be looking to us for services in hooking them up. Factions want to move around materiel, they should be using us. None of that is happening.
Drugs could be upped to be competetive. Fighting could be reworked to justify our brawling4 requirement by giving us a couple of token unarmed attacks. Slicing _must_ be reworked to make some friggin sense. Slicing could be ranked by skill in regards to what kind of weapons/armor could be sliced; ie, if you're a novice slicer you can slice novice marksman/novice brawler eq, and bone armor. Each step up moves you up the equipment difficulty too, so you have to be a master to slice the rare eq. Easy fixes.
The devs have literally hundreds of pages of this kind of suggestion, but have done nothing.
Unless you count giving an anti-CM drug to doctors instead of smugglers.

True, but we're not talking about our history, are we? Han Solo was able to make 'a few special modifications' to the Falcon, hence the slicing ability to reflect that.
Slicing is incomplete though.... the smuggling of information through the holonet (slicing) would fit well within the smuggler profession's scope. Han Solo is a model smuggler but we want to allow room for different typs of smuugglers so there isn't a bunch of Han Solo clones running around.
